                        <title>Before new steel ends up in a car, it has already been on the road for a year</title>

Step by step, these checks establish whether the steel does what car manufacturers expect from it. </p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>When you see a car on the road, you probably do not immediately think of trial coils, corrosion tests or how well steel can withstand cracking around the edge of a hole. In the Hole Expansion Test, a hole is first punched into a steel sheet. That hole is then gradually stretched further until a crack appears at the edge. This shows how much <span>local formability</span> the steel can handle when a part <span>with punched holes or trimmed edges<strong> </strong></span>is being made. <br /><br />Behind every piece of automotive steel lies a careful testing process. Especially now that we are working on a new way of producing steel with a lower environmental impact, that preparation is very important. <br /><br />Car manufacturers do not simply switch to new steel. First, they need to be able to demonstrate that the material is strong enough, can be formed properly, remains safe and fits into their own production process. <br /><br />Ingrid knows all about that. She works in Customer Technical Service for automotive: the department that forms the technical bridge between Tata Steel and car manufacturers. Together with colleagues in, among other countries, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Turkey, the Czech Republic, France and Spain, she is the point of contact for customers when it comes to technical questions, testing programmes and approvals. That international character suits her well; Ingrid is from Barcelona herself and has been working in the Netherlands for years. <br /><br /><strong>No simple tick on paper </strong><br /><br />"Homologation is the word we use in the automotive world for an approval process," says Ingrid. That may sound like getting a tick on paper, but it is anything but that. <br /><br />Tata Steel first tests the material itself. Customers then also carry out tests in their own laboratories. If those steps have gone well, a trial coil is used and a formal approval follows. <br /><br />"From the moment you say: we are going to start this today, until it is approved, it can take a year," Ingrid explains. A year of preparing trials, producing coils, cutting sheets, sending samples to laboratories and measuring properties. Some tests, such as corrosion tests, take months. And if a customer has additional requirements, the steel or the process sometimes has to be adjusted again. <br /><br /><strong>A piece of steel is put through its paces </strong><br /><br />The tests all differ. In a tensile test, for example, a small piece of sheet steel is pulled apart in a machine to measure how much force it can withstand and how far it can <span>elongate</span> before it breaks. The chemical composition, microstructure, zinc layer, coating adhesion, surface quality and formability of the steel are also examined. <br /><br /><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;text-align:left;">‘Some tests are surprisingly practical. Cars have rounded shapes, sharp edges, openings, flanges, trimmed edges and connections with other materials. That is why one of the tests that are carried out aim to see how far a hole in steel can be stretched without the material tearing. It is also tested whether steel can be bonded properly to other materials, such as aluminium or plastic. "In a car, you have plastic, steel and aluminium. Sometimes you get a kind of sandwich of different materials that all have to stay bonded together."   </span><br /><br /><strong>Why car manufacturers are extra critical </strong><br /><br />The bar is high everywhere, but especially in automotive. Steel in cars has to be strong, but often also thin and lightweight. It has to absorb energy in a crash and remain formable during production. At the same time, car manufacturers are under pressure themselves: they need to control costs, improve the performance of their end products and meet stricter requirements around sustainability and CO₂ emissions. That is why customers do not only check whether a steel grade meets the standard on paper, but also whether the quality is high and consistent enough from coil to coil. The ability to meet those expectations is therefore an important factor when choosing a supplier. <br /><br /><strong>The transition starts before the furnace is there </strong><br /><br />The switch to steel from an electric furnace also requires a great deal of preparation. The Electric Arc Furnace is on our agenda, but it is not yet in place. Waiting until it is ready is not an option. That is why we are already carrying out trials with material that resembles as closely as possible the steel that will later be produced via the new route. We have looked at the expected chemical composition, the use of scrap and the influence of residual elements: elements that come from scrap and cannot simply be removed from the steel. <br /><br />When the new production route starts, the material must be suitable for customers as quickly as possible. "Our customers expect a good product – just as good as it was – but produced via a route with a lower environmental impact," says Ingrid. That requires new installations and preparation in laboratories, plants, customer teams and at the car manufacturers themselves. <br /><br /><strong>From IJmuiden to Europe </strong><br /><br />The steel transition is therefore not only taking place on our site in IJmuiden. It extends into customers’ laboratories and factories across Europe. Automotive customers have their own goals, timelines and testing programmes. At the same time, we as a steel producer have our own transition path. Ingrid calls it "a bit of a chicken-and-egg story": everyone wants to move forward, but everyone also needs to be sure the whole chain is moving with them. <br /><br />That is why we discuss our plans with customers years in advance, so that no one is caught by surprise. Needs differ per customer and per steel grade. Ingrid and her colleagues provide technical explanations, align on testing and, above all, help build the trust needed to take the next steps together. <br /><br /><strong>Trust is just as important as technology </strong><br /><br />Ultimately, this is not only a technical story. Of course it is about properties, standards, tests and process settings. But trust is just as important. "It is all about trust," says Ingrid. "First you have to earn that trust." Customers need to be able to rely on Tata Steel to be transparent, communicate early and work with them to find the best way forward. <br /><br />That makes clear just how much happens before new steel ends up in a car. By then it has already been tested, calculated, aligned, adjusted and checked again. And it shows exactly what the transition in steel production is about: not that steel itself automatically becomes ‘cleaner’, but that it is made via a route with a lower environmental impact. That requires more than a different furnace. It requires a whole chain of people, departments and companies working together to ensure steel is produced in a different way while still doing exactly what it needs to do.</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[verhaal,omgeving,ecologie ,flora en fauna]]></category>

                        <title>Insight into every scrap load within minutes</title>

No complex logistics, no unloading required. That is the power of LIBS: a technology that scans an entire load using up to 1,000 measurements per second, providing immediate insight into its composition. What was once based on estimation is now backed by hard data—fast, accurate, and fully automated.</strong></span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span>“What we are doing here in IJmuiden is making the invisible visible. Nothing like this exists anywhere else in the world. This is truly state-of-the-art,” says Frank Schrama, Principal Researcher at Research & Development and the driving force behind the idea.</span></p><h3><span>From laser to data</span></h3><p><span>LIBS stands for <strong>Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy</strong>. It may sound complex, but the concept is surprisingly straightforward. A highly precise laser is directed at the scrap, vaporizing tiny particles of material. This creates plasma—a glowing cloud of ionized gas. By analyzing the light emitted by this plasma, it is possible to determine exactly which elements are present.</span></p><p><span>Frank explains: “To focus the laser with extreme precision, we use a mirror derived from space technology. It is one of the purest mirrors in the country, with a level of purity normally found only in satellites.”</span></p><h3><span>Scanning without unloading</span></h3><p><span>While traditional methods analyze only small samples of scrap on a conveyor belt, this innovation assesses entire, unsorted loads. “The truck drives into a high-tech tunnel, where the load is scanned without being unloaded,” Frank explains.</span></p><p><span>This saves time and makes the process significantly more efficient.</span></p><h3><span>Combining laser technology and AI</span></h3><p><span>The technology becomes even more powerful when combined with AI-enabled cameras. These cameras identify shapes, structures, and materials, and combine that information with the laser data. The result is a complete and reliable picture of the entire load.</span></p><p><span>“We perform up to 1,000 measurements per second. That allows us to know in real time exactly what a shipment contains,” says Frank.</span></p><h3><span>Essential for more sustainable steel</span></h3><p><span>Why is this so important? Scrap plays a crucial role in the production of more sustainable steel, and we aim to increase the amount of scrap used in our processes. However, scrap can sometimes contain unwanted materials, such as copper or even remnants of car tyres. These contaminants can affect the quality of new steel.</span></p><p><span>“To meet our high quality standards, we need to know the exact composition of the scrap,” says Frank. “With the LIBS portal, we will be able to determine that immediately upon arrival.”</span></p><h3><span>Next steps</span></h3><p><span>The technology was successfully tested at our IJmuiden site in March, and the initial results are promising. Later this year, a temporary, simplified portal will be introduced, with a full-scale permanent version expected around 2029.</span></p><p><span>One thing is certain: the future of steel will not only be greener, but also much smarter—and it starts with what we can already see today.</span></p><h3><span>European collaboration</span></h3><p><span>The LIBS portal is part of the European <strong>DiGreeS project</strong>, which focuses on making steel production greener. Various European partners are collaborating on this initiative, including Spectral Industries, BFI, K1-MET and SZTAKI. Fraunhofer, Voestalpine and Saarstahl are also participating in the DiGreeS project.</span></p><p><span>With support from the European Union, we are working together to develop innovative technologies for the steel industry of the future.</span></p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[verhaal,Duurzaamheid,Groen Staal,schroot]]></category>

                        <title>Statement on the decision by the Public Prosecution Service (OM) to prosecute Tata Steel IJmuiden (TSIJ)</title>

                        <guid>https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/nieuws/en/statement-on-the-decision-by-the-public-prosecution-service-om-to-prosecute-tata-steel-ijmuiden-tsij</guid><pp:caseid>762557</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p><span>The decision by the Public Prosecution Service (OM) to prosecute Tata Steel IJmuiden (TSIJ) for “allowing undercooked coke to occur” in the Coke and Gas Plants (KGF) 1 and 2 and for not reporting this in a timely manner deeply affects the company.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>TSIJ considers being a good neighbor to the local community of fundamental importance and is fully committed to minimizing its impact on the surrounding area wherever possible. The company takes concerns and criticism seriously and remains committed to implementing measures to drive continuous improvement. Tata Steel Nederland's CO₂ intensity is approximately 1.66 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of crude steel produced, placing the company among the more CO₂-efficient integrated steel producers globally.</span></p><p><span>TSIJ has for some time been engaged in discussions with the North Sea Canal Area Environmental Service (Omgevingsdienst Noordzeekanaalgebied), the relevant supervisory authority, regarding the occurrence of so‑called “undercooked coke.” Coke has a double function: to reduce the iron ores to iron and as a fuel used to reach high temperatures in blast furnaces, in order to melt iron ore for the production of liquid pig iron. TSIJ produces this coke in plants KGF 1 and 2, approximately 135,000 batches (pushes) per year.</span></p><p><span>Occasionally, a batch was not fully “cooked,” resulting in a short-term peak emission. TSIJ seeks to minimize such undercooked coke, but in an industrial production process of this scale it is technically unavoidable that, on occasion, a coke batch is not fully cooked. Therefore, an absolute guarantee to prevent undercooked coke can never be given.</span></p><p><span>TSIJ has been engaged in an in-depth technical discussion on this subject with the Environmental Service for a considerable period. Based on those discussions and the measures taken, TSIJ has implemented substantial and tangible improvements since 2020. As a result, the number of instances of “undercooked coke” has been reduced by 98%; in the period from January 2020 to May 2026, this averaged less than 0.011%. This is below the industry average. In recent years, only a few cases have occurred out of 135,000 pushes per year, with 1 instance in 2023, and zero in 2024 and 2025. For these reasons, TSIJ considers the allegations &nbsp;fundamentally to be unjustified.</span></p><p><span>TSIJ also considers it unnecessary to initiate criminal proceedings regarding a limited number of KGF incidents from the past, which have in fact been the subject of technical improvements. In light of the fact that TSIJ has long been in dialogue with the Environmental Service on undercooked coke, TSIJ believes this case adds nothing. Moreover, KGF 1 and 2 will in any event be fully closed in the coming years as part of the Green Steel Project, through which TSIJ will transition to a more sustainable method of steel production.</span></p><p><span>The allegations are being further reviewed by TSIJ. A substantive defence will, of course, be presented during the court proceedings.</span></p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[statements]]></category>

Tata Steel Nederland attaches great importance to the health of local residents and employees and appreciates the thoroughness of the report.</strong></span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span>The expert group was established in 2023 to provide the Dutch Government with independent advice on improving the protection of the health of people living in the IJmond region. Commenting on the report, Olga Timmerhuis, Director Health, Safety & Environment at Tata Steel Nederland states: “The expert group proposes, among other things, gaining insight into the entire emissions chain: from emissions originating on our site to exposure in the local living environment and the resulting health effects in surrounding communities. Tata Steel Nederland wants to contribute to this effort through its knowledge, data and expertise. We understand the concerns of local residents and want to support an approach that not only measures emissions at the source, but also provides a clear picture of actual exposure in the surrounding environment. We will discuss this with local residents, the expert group and the Ministry so that, together, we can develop clear, practical and effective monitoring criteria. We also recognise that further improvements to our processes are still needed.”</span></p><p><span><strong>Continuous Improvement Through Monitoring</strong></span></p><p><span>Optimising our processes based on measurement results is at the heart of our approach to reducing our impact on the environment. In recent years, we have significantly expanded our monitoring activities, covering more substances, more locations and more frequent measurements, complemented by independent monitoring carried out by external experts.</span></p><p><span>Tata Steel now operates more than 300 emissions monitoring points and a range of monitoring systems, including:</span></p><ul style="list-style-type:disc;"><li data-list-item-id="e36fb2d7c5b5f783da39ce174653d8638"><span>More than 60 electronic noses to monitor ambient air composition;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="e84cf293348a1d46633038d448ebfca2c"><span>Fine particulate matter sensors operated in collaboration with the citizen air-monitoring network;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="ea9d3848457aa3a7f441e7481113992fe"><span>Noise monitoring at more than 10 measurement locations;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="ecb9f748c3044e5272b96f15084e7c1b2"><span>Research into ultrafine particles in the surrounding area.</span></li></ul><p><span>Insights gained from these measurements are used to improve processes and further reduce emissions. Tata Steel publishes its monitoring results online, making them accessible to everyone.</span></p><p><span><strong>Source-Based Measures Remain Essential</strong></span></p><p><span>Alongside monitoring, Tata Steel is strongly focused on reducing emissions through source-based measures and environmental control installations. Examples include:</span></p><ul style="list-style-type:disc;"><li data-list-item-id="e0932c36b8102e2f87b2f48569e4423e1"><span>A new dedusting installation at the Pellet Plant, which has reduced emissions of particulate matter, lead and heavy metals by more than 80%;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="ee09eca06fc868d8ec65c166f6274f788"><span>An off-gas cleaning installation at the Cold Rolling Mill and other measures that have reduced PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) emissions from three sources by more than half;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="e52c528f5ab10d4558f3b0d128564864a"><span>A third extraction system at the Steel Plant.</span></li></ul><p><span><strong>Towards Green Steel</strong></span></p><p><span>Tata Steel Nederland aims to conclude a bespoke agreement with the Dutch Government this year for its </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green-steel-plan" target="_blank"><span>Green Steel project.</span></a><span> This agreement will include additional measures that go beyond legal requirements to further improve the local living environment and reduce health risks. In addition, noise generated during the unloading of scrap will be dampened by the enclosure. With a length of nearly 400 metres, a width of 94 metres and a height of 23 metres, this enclosure will be one of the largest structures of its kind.</span></p><p><span>To further reduce dust dispersion, new conveyor belts will be fully enclosed. Additional misting systems will be installed at various locations on existing belts. For example, conveyor belts at the ore blending yards will be equipped with extra spraying systems to keep raw materials moist and prevent dust formation during transport. This process will be continuously monitored using sensors.</span></p><p><span><strong>Supporting infrastructure and next steps</strong></span></p><p><span>As part of these projects, a new ‘power supply & control’ installation will also be constructed. This will supply electricity to the facilities at ore blending yard 2. In addition, the permit application includes numerous supporting projects required to realise the new setup, such as the relocation of containers, lamp posts and other infrastructure.</span></p><p><span>In the future, ore storage yard 2 will also be partially enclosed. A permit application for this will be submitted at a later stage, once construction of ore blending yard 2 has been completed.</span></p><p><span><strong>Part of broader sustainability efforts</strong></span></p><p><span>The measures are in line with the agreements set out in the </span><a href="https://open.overheid.nl/documenten/8ba9e407-9bf8-492a-b8b2-418dd227a09a/file" target="_blank"><span>Joint Letter of Intent (JLoI)</span></a><span>, concluded at the end of September 2025 between Tata Steel Nederland, parent company Tata Steel Limited in India, and the Dutch government for the greening of steel production through the </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green-steel-plan" target="_blank"><span>Green Steel Project</span></a><span>.                         <title>Striking greenery set within steel and installations</title>

And yet this is never the first thing that comes to mind when people visit the site. </strong></span><strong>Between our factories, surprisingly rich vegetation is thriving. Ecologist Piet Admiraal and site manager Perry Buijsman are working together to not only preserve biodiversity, but strengthen it step by step. “It starts with awareness and policy,” says Piet. “Then it gets better step by step.”</strong></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Unique species on our site&nbsp;</strong><br>All sorts of things grow and bloom across the site. Piet says: “In several places we have dune slack vegetation. These are very special places.” Among the species growing there are the marsh helleborine, military orchid, common marsh orchid and bee orchid. One species particularly stands out: “That is the lizard orchid,” Piet explains. “It is legally protected and was identified during the ecological survey carried out for the Heracles Groen Staal project. Naturally, I’m very keen to see it in bloom, so Perry is not allowed to mow it down,” the ecologist jokes. But smooth cat's ear, a highly protected species, also has one known growing location on our site. Many people are unaware of this, Perry notes: “Many people think nothing grows here, even though there are species here that you hardly see elsewhere, including in nature reserves.” Piet adds: “At the right time of year, everything is beautifully in bloom. It is really much more than just brambles and nettles. Even after 100 years of industry, we still have patches of genuinely old oak woodland.”&nbsp;<br><br><i>“I’m very keen to see that lizard orchid in flower”&nbsp;</i><br><br><strong>From policy to practice&nbsp;</strong><br>We also want to preserve all this remarkable greenery. In projects that fall outside routine maintenance, biodiversity is already being considered in a structured way. “What we already do very well is the project-based work,” Piet explains. “That is always preceded by a flora and fauna survey.” A concrete example is the Heracles project, where it was investigated in advance which protected species were present. To apply that same care consistently everywhere, Piet is working with colleagues from HSE and Sustainability on a biodiversity policy. “That way, we get clear guidelines and a clear way of working down on paper,” says Piet. “And ultimately, the mandate to make choices as well.” In addition, for routine site management we are looking at working with a code of conduct for nature management. This makes it possible to plan activities more effectively – for example outside the breeding season – in order to prevent damage to flora and fauna.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>The strength of working together&nbsp;</strong><br>The collaboration between Piet and Perry proved crucial. “Things were happening on site where we did not always know what was and was not allowed,” says Perry. “By involving Piet, we sometimes discovered that things had to be done differently.”&nbsp;<br><br>By now, the two work well together and know how to find each other easily. The next step is to embed biodiversity across the whole site. Perry says: “We want to prevent work from being carried out and only afterwards realising that a lot of greenery has disappeared. We would much rather be involved in advance, so we can help think through alternatives.” Piet adds: “And then we can also combine things efficiently. If excavation work is planned in a particular location, for example, we can combine it straight away with invasive species control. If you are digging anyway, you might as well remove those plants at the same time and dispose of them properly.”&nbsp;<br><br><i>“Piet has driven quite a few rounds to map unique species”&nbsp;</i><br><br><strong>Making different choices&nbsp;</strong><br>According to Perry and Piet, what is still missing is mainly a more careful way of working. “At the moment, we often are still a bit too rigorous,” Perry explains. Careful working often comes down to small, practical choices. Piet says: “When mowing, for example, leave some corners untouched and do not do everything at once. That way, insects keep their habitat.” Green management is also being viewed differently. “Safety is of course the most important thing. This means sometimes, for example, a tree in the sightline by the railway must go. Instead of felling that tree, we can also replant it elsewhere on the site,” Piet says enthusiastically. “That immediately improves the site as well,” Perry adds. In this way, unwanted trees or shrubs in one location can be given a new place on the site, instead of buying new non-native planting stock. That is more sustainable and, in the long term, cheaper.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Together we preserve our unique nature</strong>&nbsp;<br>The ambition is clear: first preserve what we have and subsequently improve it. “We want to preserve what we have – and add an ecological plus to it,” says Piet. “That can only be done together. Many employees work every day on steel that is of great importance to the Netherlands and Europe, while at the same time efforts are being made to transition to a different way of producing steel—with lower emissions and reduced impact on the surrounding environment.</span></p><p><span>We acknowledge that steel production has an impact and that continuous improvement is required. The Green Steel Project plays a central role in this. This project marks a fundamental transformation of steel production in the Netherlands, with the aim of maintaining steel production while making it cleaner, greener, and more circular.</span></p><p><span>This transformation requires adjustments in processes, organization, and ways of working. At the same time, much is at stake: together with suppliers and partners, Tata Steel Nederland supports an ecosystem on which tens of thousands of families depend.</span></p><p><span>With this annual report, Tata Steel Nederland accounts for its results and progress in the financial year from April 1, 2025, through March 31, 2026.                         <title>A home for birds and bats on our site</title>

But if you look more closely, you’ll discover something else: a surprising amount of nature. Between and on the buildings, dozens of small wooden nest boxes are hanging. They provide birds and bats with a safe home and contribute to biodiversity on our site.</strong></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><strong>400 football fields&nbsp;</strong><br>“Many people don’t realize how much green space we actually have,” says Jeroen van Vlaanderen, Asset Owner Infra and Sites. “If you add it all up, you quickly reach around 250 hectares of green space. That’s about 400 football fields. That’s quite a lot, and it makes it an interesting habitat for different species.”&nbsp;<br><br><strong>A great initiative&nbsp;<img class="image-style-align-right" style="width:200px;" src="https://content.presspage.com/uploads/2939/ab7e8fb9-37f8-4447-9bc3-1de0f512a2a3/500_mezenkast.jpg?x=1780489811497" width="200" alt="Mezenkast "></strong><br>The idea for the bird and bat boxes came through contact with a retired colleague. Jeroen explains: “Through him, we came into contact with Veel in Hout, a social workplace in Heemskerk where nest boxes are made. That immediately made us think this is a very beautiful initiative. By now, bird and bat boxes have been installed in various locations across the site.” The installation of the boxes fits well with our Green Steel project, in which parts of the site are being redesigned. The nest boxes are a valuable addition to the natural shelter and nesting places that are already present.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>A corridor across our site&nbsp;</strong><br>According to ecologist Piet Admiraal, our site is surprisingly suitable for certain species. “Especially building-dwelling species benefit from the boxes,” he explains. “Think of bats and tits, but also the black redstart, a migratory bird that finds a temporary home here during the breeding season. These species thrive in an environment with both buildings and green areas. And we have plenty of that combination here.” In total, there are now 75 boxes installed on the site: fifty for birds and 25 for bats. The locations have been carefully selected. “Most boxes are placed in or near green areas. But we have also installed boxes near buildings, because some species prefer to nest there. In places where natural nesting sites are scarce, the boxes offer a solution. They essentially fill a gap. Not everywhere there are trees with natural cavities. With these boxes, we still provide animals with a suitable place,” Piet explains. “In this way, we connect different habitats. It creates a corridor that allows animals to move more easily across the site, strengthening nature,” Jeroen adds.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Safe shelters</strong>&nbsp;<br>For birds, the boxes are mainly used as nesting sites in spring and summer. Some species also use them as shelters in winter. Bats mainly use the boxes as summer roosts, where they rest during the day. In addition to bird and bat boxes, we also have bat bunkers on our site. During the annual survey, these were found to be well used. Across the four bunkers, nineteen Daubenton’s bats and four brown long-eared bats were counted.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Preserving ecological value&nbsp;</strong><br>But the project goes beyond just providing a place for animals to sleep. “The most important thing is that we preserve and preferably enhance ecological value,” says Jeroen. “We need to take nature into account in all activities on the site. Our nature policy is laid down in a management plan. It describes the measures we take to preserve and strengthen nature and biodiversity. In addition, we are working on supplementary plans for specific topics, so that everything ultimately comes together in one clear approach,” Piet adds. According to him, there are still plenty of opportunities. “The site is large enough for more initiatives, such as ecological site management and additional nest boxes for different species. Alongside the existing commercial relationship between TSIJ and Ecocem for the valorization of Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBS) in cement & concrete, this new collaboration focuses on Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) slag as an alternative cementitious material, alongside the continued development of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) slag as a supplementary cementitious material.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>By replacing clinker — the most carbon-intensive ingredient in cement — with alternative materials such as slag, the cement industry can significantly cut CO₂ emissions while giving industrial by-products a more valuable and circular use.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The aim of the BOF and EAF slags project is to transform these steel industry by-products into cementitious binders or constituents that can support the decarbonisation of cement and concrete production, while advancing circular economy principles. However, participating in this research provides valuable insights for producing high‑quality steel that contains 30 to 40% scrap.</span></p><p><span>Machine Learning and digital models are also being used to examine to what extent contaminated scrap can be cleaned for optimal reuse. This requires removing unwanted elements from the scrap. Dr. Rana: “If we succeed, this will be a real win‑win, also because of the critical raw materials such as copper, we will be able to recover.”</span></p><p><span>Alongside universities and research institutes, </span><a href="https://cisma-project.eu/"><span>CiSMA</span></a><span> brings together commercial partners from various sectors including automotive, professional laundry equipment and engineering. Volvo Cars and Electrolux Professional, for example, are researching the (commercial) applicability of this recycled steel in cars and washing machines whilst boosting a circular approach and reducing CO₂ impact. The guiding principle is that this circular steel offers exactly the same properties and performance as traditionally produced high‑quality steel. Dr. Johan Pilthammar, Engineering Technical Specialist at Volvo Cars</span><i><span> </span></i><span>adds: “It’s very important for Volvo Cars to understand if, and how, a higher recycled content is influencing the steel’s behaviour. This project is of high value for us since it will verify that this assumption holds for the investigated steel grades in the forming process. Also, if we see differences with a higher recycled content, we will learn how to adapt to these changes.”</span></p><p><span>“Electrolux Professional&nbsp;remains&nbsp;wholly committed&nbsp;to&nbsp;reducing&nbsp;the&nbsp;climate change impact&nbsp;of our industrial operations. That was the challenge we received through our partner Steel Warehouse. Our R&D team took it on by combining advanced digital simulations with smart material choices - and the results exceeded expectations.</strong></span></p><p><span><strong>A smarter way to build tipper trailers</strong></span></p><p><span>Tipper trailers may not be part of everyday street life, but they are essential to logistics. Transporting stones, sand, soil and scrap, they operate under extreme conditions and are subject to continuous impact and wear. That makes structural integrity and durability absolutely critical.</span></p><p><span>At the same time, the market increasingly demands lighter, frameless trailer designs. Less weight means lower fuel consumption, higher payloads and more efficient fleets — but never at the expense of safety. Steel Warehouse asked whether we could help rethink the design of one our end users with exactly that balance in mind.</span></p><p><span><strong>Our digital test track</strong></span></p><p><span>Instead of relying primarily on physical prototyping, our engineers turned to advanced structural simulations. These tools allowed us to analyse how the trailer behaves under all relevant operating conditions: driving, braking, loading, unloading and cornering.</span></p><p><span>Think of it as a digital test track - faster, more detailed and more cost‑effective than real‑world testing. The simulations revealed exactly where material could be reduced and where additional strength was essential. Fatigue‑based design played a key role here, assessing how steel performs under millions of load cycles using extensive material fatigue data, including insights from the Aurora fatigue test database.</span></p><p><span>The digital simulations delivered surprising insights. “We found that some components were originally designed more conservatively than necessary based on fatigue safety requirements,” explains R&D specialist Sunil Gowda. “This enabled targeted adjustments while maintaining performance.”</span></p><p><span>One of the most striking outcomes was that several components in the original design were over‑engineered relative to the required fatigue safety factors. This opened the door to targeted downgauging, allowing weight reduction while fully maintaining structural performance and durability. Thanks to the simulation‑driven approach, rapid design iterations were possible, leading to a validated design proposal in less than two months.</span></p><p><span><strong>Why Valast® made the difference</strong></span></p><p><span>Material selection proved crucial. Valast® steel emerged as a key enabler in the optimized design. Its excellent wear resistance, dent resistance and mechanical properties make it particularly suitable for heavy-duty tipper trailer bodies.</span></p><p><span>By applying Valast® strategically - using superior material only where it truly matters - the team achieved reliable downgauging without compromising performance. This approach reflects a broader shift in the market, where customers increasingly recognize the value of using advanced steel grades in critical areas rather than over‑engineering entire structures.</span></p><p><span>The end user his confidence is further strengthened by Steel Warehouse’s investment in a dedicated decoiling line for Valast®, reinforcing the U.S. value chain and supporting wider adoption.</span></p><p><span><strong>Commercial impact and market position</strong></span></p><p><span>The results were compelling. Beyond delivering a lighter and stronger trailer design, the project opened the door to an estimated 1,000 tones of annual steel volume in the U.S. market - a significant opportunity for this highly specialized and differentiated product.</span></p><p><span>More broadly, the methodology developed - combining FEA-driven safety factor assessment, optimized multigrade steel use and fatigue-based design - is directly transferable to other heavy-duty trailer and industrial equipment applications in both the U.S. and EU.                         <title>“Everyone is talking about hydrogen – and these pipes make it possible”</title>

Between the exhibition stands and conversations, one thing stood out clearly: everyone is talking about hydrogen – and about the pipelines that make transporting it possible.</strong></span></p><p><span>When people think about the energy transition, they often picture wind turbines and new installations. Alieke and Patricia see something else just as essential: infrastructure. Pipelines beneath the ground and under the sea will form the backbone of hydrogen and CO₂ transport. “You can produce all the hydrogen you want, but if you can’t transport it, it’s of little use,” says Alieke. “That’s why we work on steel for large transport pipelines that can move hydrogen and CO₂ safely and at scale.”</span></p><p><span><strong>Why this is bigger than you might think</strong></span></p><p><span>These pipelines are not only needed for hydrogen infrastructure, but also for Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS): capturing and storing CO₂. “Many networks were originally built for natural gas, but this is not natural gas 2.0,” explains Patricia. “The steel must be demonstrably reliable over time – including at low temperatures and along the entire length of a pipeline.”</span></p><p><span>Together, Alieke and Patricia ensure that projects move beyond the question of </span><i><span>whether</span></i><span> something is possible and towards </span><i><span>how</span></i><span> it can be done. Our steel is supplied to manufacturers who turn it into pipes. Those pipes are then used in many places, including:</span></p><ul><li data-list-item-id="e804da69b4081d3d07b3bf83291fb350c"><span>Hydrogen networks (the so‑called hydrogen highway)</span></li><li data-list-item-id="e669b4175551b7326594f9a1694781655"><span>CO₂ transport pipelines</span></li><li data-list-item-id="e3d756ccdc2be97601eddee8b83127623"><span>Energy, water and infrastructure projects (large-scale connections)</span></li><li data-list-item-id="ef4082cb01ca4705d93efb4a3bd846a86"><span>Cross-border energy networks (where countries connect their systems)</span></li></ul><p><span>This work touches on major themes such as energy security, decarbonising industry, and the safe delivery of infrastructure projects.</span></p><p><span><strong>An additional challenge</strong></span></p><p><span>“That means a large part of the energy transition remains invisible, while preparations are already well underway,” says Alieke. “Our steel has to meet very high requirements: it must be extremely strong and perform at low temperatures. With hydrogen there is an additional challenge, because there is not yet a single, established standard. We are currently developing those standards using data, testing and real-world experience – together with our customers and their partners.” “The entire value chain is involved,” Alieke adds. “Forming, welding, testing, behaviour in service… This helps prevent discovering late in a project that something behaves slightly differently than expected.”</span></p><p><span>By working closely with colleagues from New Product Development, Commercial, Marketing, Customer Technical Support, R&D and Production – including KTO for factory trials – as well as externally with pipe manufacturers, customers, certification bodies and test partners, we have access to extensive data. “It’s no longer technology on one side and commercial on the other,” Alieke emphasises. “Market questions and test results continuously inform each other, and we are very grateful for the support across the company in helping us deliver the best possible product. Developing new solutions and conducting trials is demanding for teams, but it is an indispensable link in the success of this product.”</span></p><p><span>In Düsseldorf, conversations were already shifting away from </span><i><span>if</span></i><span> and increasingly towards </span><i><span>how</span></i><span>. “We’re seeing more and more signals that the trial material works,” says Patricia. “Customers are turning it into pipes and the tests are producing good results. The next step? Scaling up: more strength grades, more dimensions and structural deliveries. Line pipe is still often project-based, which requires additional qualifications.”</span></p><p><span><strong>Steel fit for purpose</strong></span></p><p><span>Did you know that Europe alone plans to install more than 50,000 kilometres of hydrogen pipelines in the coming years? That’s around two-fifths of the current natural gas transmission network. Much of that network will be converted or newly built – and yes, that requires steel suitable for hydrogen transport. “A large part of the energy transition is invisible, but it literally runs on steel,” Alieke and Patricia emphasise. “Line pipe is not a niche product: it is infrastructure that determines whether hydrogen and CCS remain plans on paper – or become reality.”</span></p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[verhaal,linepipes]]></category>

Producing steel without generating steel slag is not possible. Steel slag has been used for decades throughout Europe in construction and infrastructure.</span></p><p><span>For a material that is produced and used across Europe, a Europe‑wide scientific assessment is required. REACH is European legislation that applies to the entire European steel sector. Tata Steel IJmuiden is actively committed to the European update process of the REACH registration, which is currently being carried out by the European REACH Ferrous Slag Consortium. European clarity is expected in the near term, which will provide guidance for all Member States.</span></p><p><span>Tata Steel IJmuiden operates in accordance with the precautionary principle, regardless of the formal classification of LD steel slags. That’s why we developed Valast: wear‑resistant steel with extremely high strength, specifically designed for heavy-duty applications. Our R&D expert Carel ten Horn explains how we test this steel and what it can deliver.</strong></span></p><p><span>Valast combines wear resistance with high strength. This makes it better able to withstand heavy loads than ‘standard’ steel. As a result, our customers lose less material, require less maintenance and benefit from a longer trailer lifespan.</span></p><p><span>But it’s not just about wear: denting also plays a role. This can occur, for example, when a stone block lands in the trailer bed from a height of one to two metres during loading or unloading. And that’s not merely a cosmetic issue — if the impact is too severe, the material can crack.</span></p><p><span>To prevent this, we went in search of ultra‑strong steel and use simulation software that is also employed in the automotive industry for crash tests. “That gives us a good indication of what the material can handle,” says Carel. “But to be sure our predictions are correct, we also carry out laboratory tests.”</span></p><p><span>When a steel grade is stronger, it can sometimes be made thinner while still bearing the same load. This is interesting for trailer builders and transport companies, because on the road there is a maximum allowed mass for vehicle plus load. A lighter vehicle means you can carry more. “But thinner is never a goal in itself,” Carel emphasises. “Ultimately, it’s about the customer’s overall set of requirements, so we also look at dent resistance, wear resistance and fatigue.”</span></p><p><span>For example, dent resistance may create room to opt for thinner steel, while other criteria may require additional safety margins. “We assess which thickness and steel strength are suitable for each individual component. And if testing shows that a chosen thickness is too optimistic, we naturally adjust it."</span></p><p><span>How far are we already? “In the first phase, we carried out calculations using a trailer model as well as a simplified test: a plate of approximately 2 by 2 metres onto which a 1,000‑kilogram block is dropped. After forming the elongation remains high&nbsp;–&nbsp;meaning it can absorb&nbsp;impacts&nbsp;up to&nbsp;2 times higher.&nbsp;This corresponds to an increase of&nbsp;roughly 40%&nbsp;in speed. At those temperatures,&nbsp;the zinc coating on&nbsp;the steel&nbsp;can melt, resulting&nbsp;in cracking. For that reason, manufacturers often use&nbsp;aluminium‑silicon coated steels. Those can withstand&nbsp;high temperatures&nbsp;but offer lower corrosion resistance. “By developing this new high‑quality steel grades, we address these limitations,” says Dr. Radhakanta Rana, metallurgist at Tata Steel Nederland and project leader of&nbsp;WarP-AHSS. Dr. Rana explains: “The benefits go beyond energy savings alone. By combining ultra-high strength with exceptional&nbsp;in-service&nbsp;formability, these new steels&nbsp;can absorb significantly more crash energy. This&nbsp;reduces&nbsp;the&nbsp;effect&nbsp;of a collision and increases passenger safety. That is the question Tata Steel&nbsp;Nederland&nbsp;is exploring within the European&nbsp;Commission sponsored&nbsp;CiSMA project.</strong>&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0px;text-align:left;"><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;">Together with partners across the value chain, we are researching steel grades that are strong,&nbsp;formable,&nbsp;meet strict safety&nbsp;requirements&nbsp;and have a much lower&nbsp;carbon&nbsp;footprint. The goal is clear: to make circular steels&nbsp;ready for large-scale use, which reflects also in the full name of CiSMA&nbsp;(<strong>Ci</strong>rcular&nbsp;<strong>S</strong>teel for&nbsp;<strong>M</strong>ass Market&nbsp;<strong>A</strong>pplications).&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0px;text-align:left;"><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;"><strong>From scrap to steel</strong>&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0px;text-align:left;"><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;">At the heart of the project is steel produced from 100% recycled scrap using Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology. This technology leads to far lower CO₂ emissions than traditional blast furnace processes and fits naturally with a circular economy.&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0px;text-align:left;"><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;">For Tata Steel Nederland, the project aligns closely with the&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green-steel-plan" target="_blank"><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;"><u>Green Steel Plan</u></span></a><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;">;&nbsp;our ambition to produce&nbsp;carbon&nbsp;neutral steel in the future, using modern technologies and new installations.&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0px;text-align:left;"><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;"><strong>Researching,&nbsp;testing&nbsp;and learning</strong>&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0px;text-align:left;"><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;">The work starts at&nbsp;laboratory&nbsp;scale.&nbsp;R&D department of&nbsp;Tata Steel&nbsp;Nederland&nbsp;develops and tests several steel grades, including DP800 steel for automotive applications and IF steel for white goods. Their&nbsp;adjusted&nbsp;chemical compositions reflect a future society in which scrap and circularity play a much larger role.&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0px;text-align:left;"><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;">The steels are studied in detail. How strong are they? How well can they be formed? And what is the effect of residual elements&nbsp;coming&nbsp;from scrap? Tata Steel&nbsp;Nederland&nbsp;also supplies scrap samples&nbsp;to the consortium partners&nbsp;and contributes to&nbsp;scrap sorting and&nbsp;new testing&nbsp;&&nbsp;characterisation&nbsp;methods to help answer these questions.&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0px;text-align:left;"><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;"><strong>From laboratory&nbsp;to&nbsp;industrial&nbsp;practice</strong>&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0px;text-align:left;"><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;">Research is essential, but real-world performance is what&nbsp;ultimately matters. That is why we also carry out industrial production trials. Selected steel grades are produced under conditions that closely resemble future EAF-based production processes, helping to move from experimentation towards scale-up.&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0px;text-align:left;"><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;"><strong>Tested in real applications</strong>&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0px;text-align:left;"><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;">The steel grades are then tested by partners such as Volvo Cars and Electrolux Professional. Tata Steel&nbsp;Nederland&nbsp;also provides key data on CO₂ emissions, enabling life cycle assessments (LCA) alongside&nbsp;prototype&nbsp;testing. An LCA is a scientific method used to calculate the total environmental impact of a product,&nbsp;service&nbsp;or process over its entire life cycle;&nbsp;from raw material extraction to end-of-life.&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0px;text-align:left;"><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;"><strong>Towards&nbsp;green steel</strong>&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0px;text-align:left;"><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;">The CiSMA project directly supports our ambition towards&nbsp;producing&nbsp;CO₂-neutral steel, as set out in&nbsp;the Green Steel Plan. But what makes this line so special? “We’re setting a new European standard.”</span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span>The TCCT line is a smart upgrade of our tinning line from the 1960s. It has been converted into a modern, sustainable installation. Mark Litz, Manager Process Technology, has been involved from day one. Five years ago, the idea existed only in his mind — now it’s reality.</span></p><p><span><strong>Top quality&nbsp;</strong></span></p><p><span>Our packaging steel was already top quality, of course, but we can now produce it in a smarter, safer and more sustainable way. The TCCT process uses chrome 3 instead of chrome 6, removes several steps from the original production process, and adds a protective layer that keeps canned food fresh for longer. That layer also makes it easier to apply a film that customers can then print with their own design.</span></p><p><span><strong>How it works&nbsp;</strong></span></p><p><span>So how does it work? We asked Daniëlle Vrenegoor, process and product technologist for the tinning and chroming lines. “The steel arrives in a coil. That coil is unrolled and then moves up and down through different processes along the entire line. Step by step, the steel is treated: pre‑treatment, chroming, rinsing, drying… and finally inspected with cameras and smart software to ensure we deliver the highest quality. At the end, the steel is rolled up again. Once the protective chrome layer is applied, the coil can move on to the next installation or directly to the customer.”</span></p><p><span><strong>Where to spot the product&nbsp;</strong></span></p><p><span>You won’t yet find cans made from this steel in Dutch supermarkets - the line has only just started - but in Spain you can already buy a can of tuna from the Calvo brand using Protact. The prestigious event, also known as the Wimbledon of chess, was held from 16 January to 1 February in Wijk aan Zee. The tournament has a long tradition and has brought the world’s best chess players to the Dutch coastal town for decades.</span></p><p><span><strong>Thrilling Finale</strong></span></p><p><span>During the final weekend, the battle for the title remained exciting until the very last moment; no fewer than five grandmasters still had a chance to win. In the end, the 21-year-old Uzbek claimed the title.</span></p><p><span>Tournament director Jeroen van den Berg responded enthusiastically: “What a tremendous achievement by Nodirbek Abdusattorov. It is more than deserved that Nodirbek wins here; he has been playing at a high and consistent level throughout the tournament. In recent years he came very close, and now he captures the title. I warmly congratulate him and, of course, invite him to return next year to Wijk aan Zee to defend his title.”</span></p><p><span><strong>Global Interest and Record Numbers</strong></span></p><p><span>This year, the Tata Steel Chess Tournament once again reached a worldwide audience. The grandmasters’ games were streamed between 500,000 and 800,000 times per day, with peaks of up to 1 million viewers daily. Fans all over the world followed the moves live, supported by razor-sharp footage from Dorpshuis De Moriaan and café De Zon, where well-known commentators provided live analysis.</span></p><p><span>New this year was a rapid chess tournament at Hotel Hoge Duin in Wijk aan Zee, offering even more variety for players and visitors. Van den Berg: “We can look back on a fantastic edition with a large number of visitors, many participating amateur chess players, and an unprecedented international reach. Tata Steel Netherlands is calling on activists not to disrupt the prestigious international chess event.</strong></span></p><p><span>We respect everyone’s right to demonstrate and to draw attention to the need for a rapid transition from fossil raw materials to sustainable alternatives. Both the activists and we share the same goal: the transition from coal to a greener, cleaner, and more circular way of producing steel in the IJmond region. This is why our Green Steel plan exists.</span></p><p><span>We differ in opinion regarding the timeline, and we have spoken with various activist groups about this on several occasions. As far as we are concerned, the dialogue will remain open.</span></p><p><span><strong>‘Wimbledon of chess’</strong></span></p><p><span>The Tata Steel Chess Tournament is a world‑famous chess event held annually in January at community center De Moriaan in Wijk aan Zee. This year marks the 88th edition. It is one of the largest and strongest tournaments, featuring top-level players (14 masters and 14 challengers) and attracting more than ten thousand visitors from around the world over the course of two weeks. The tournament has an important place on the international chess calendar, is a household name in the chess world, and is often referred to as the “Wimbledon of chess.”</span></p><p><span><strong>Boost for the coastal village</strong></span></p><p><span>What began in 1938 as an employee tournament of the steel company has grown into an international event of global stature. Since 2010, the tournament (formerly Hoogovens and Corus) has been named after Tata Steel. The event ensures that during the usually quiet winter months, chess enthusiasts travel to Wijk aan Zee in January. This is the next step in the process in which they previously, in August 2023, held Tata Steel liable for damage caused by emissions of hazardous and/or harmful substances. We will review the documents.<br><br>Health and a clean living environment are important topics for us, just as they are for local residents and other stakeholders. We certainly take feedback and suggestions into account as we continuously work to improve our plants and reduce emissions of dust, noise, and odor.<br>&nbsp;<br>In recent years, we have taken various measures to ensure cleaner production. For example, we are reducing emissions of lead, other metals, and PAHs. The results of these measures can be found in our reports and on our website.<br>&nbsp;<br>With our Green Steel plan, we will take even more measures to improve the living environment. This has been explicitly considered in the recently concluded Joint Letter of Intent. We will continue to work on additional measures to further reduce emissions. In this way, we aim to contribute to a better living environment in the IJmond region. That is what local residents want, and what we want as well, and we are happy to keep the dialogue going.&nbsp;</p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[statements]]></category>

The Green Box is produced with a sustainable type of plastic, made from recycled high density polyethylene, with good UV resistance characteristics and designed by Tata Steel Nederland. Production is based on injection molding, with alternative methods like deep drawing also explored.
