                        <title>Tata Steel Nederland on the third report of the IJmond Health Expert Group</title>

Tata Steel Nederland attaches great importance to the health of local residents and employees and appreciates the thoroughness of the report.</strong></span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span>The expert group was established in 2023 to provide the Dutch Government with independent advice on improving the protection of the health of people living in the IJmond region. Commenting on the report, Olga Timmerhuis, Director Health, Safety & Environment at Tata Steel Nederland states: “The expert group proposes, among other things, gaining insight into the entire emissions chain: from emissions originating on our site to exposure in the local living environment and the resulting health effects in surrounding communities. Tata Steel Nederland wants to contribute to this effort through its knowledge, data and expertise. We understand the concerns of local residents and want to support an approach that not only measures emissions at the source, but also provides a clear picture of actual exposure in the surrounding environment. We will discuss this with local residents, the expert group and the Ministry so that, together, we can develop clear, practical and effective monitoring criteria. We also recognise that further improvements to our processes are still needed.”</span></p><p><span><strong>Continuous Improvement Through Monitoring</strong></span></p><p><span>Optimising our processes based on measurement results is at the heart of our approach to reducing our impact on the environment. In recent years, we have significantly expanded our monitoring activities, covering more substances, more locations and more frequent measurements, complemented by independent monitoring carried out by external experts.</span></p><p><span>Tata Steel now operates more than 300 emissions monitoring points and a range of monitoring systems, including:</span></p><ul style="list-style-type:disc;"><li data-list-item-id="e36fb2d7c5b5f783da39ce174653d8638"><span>More than 60 electronic noses to monitor ambient air composition;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="e84cf293348a1d46633038d448ebfca2c"><span>Fine particulate matter sensors operated in collaboration with the citizen air-monitoring network;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="ea9d3848457aa3a7f441e7481113992fe"><span>Noise monitoring at more than 10 measurement locations;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="ecb9f748c3044e5272b96f15084e7c1b2"><span>Research into ultrafine particles in the surrounding area.</span></li></ul><p><span>Insights gained from these measurements are used to improve processes and further reduce emissions. Tata Steel publishes its monitoring results online, making them accessible to everyone.</span></p><p><span><strong>Source-Based Measures Remain Essential</strong></span></p><p><span>Alongside monitoring, Tata Steel is strongly focused on reducing emissions through source-based measures and environmental control installations. Examples include:</span></p><ul style="list-style-type:disc;"><li data-list-item-id="e0932c36b8102e2f87b2f48569e4423e1"><span>A new dedusting installation at the Pellet Plant, which has reduced emissions of particulate matter, lead and heavy metals by more than 80%;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="ee09eca06fc868d8ec65c166f6274f788"><span>An off-gas cleaning installation at the Cold Rolling Mill and other measures that have reduced PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) emissions from three sources by more than half;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="e52c528f5ab10d4558f3b0d128564864a"><span>A third extraction system at the Steel Plant.</span></li></ul><p><span><strong>Towards Green Steel</strong></span></p><p><span>Tata Steel Nederland aims to conclude a bespoke agreement with the Dutch Government this year for its </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green-steel-plan" target="_blank"><span>Green Steel project.</span></a><span> This agreement will include additional measures that go beyond legal requirements to further improve the local living environment and reduce health risks. (</strong></span><a href="https://www.ecocemglobal.com/"><span><strong>Ecocem</strong></span></a><span><strong>) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their collaboration on the development and potential use of two next-generation steelmaking slags in low‑carbon cement, mortar, and concrete applications across Europe.</strong></span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The MoU builds on an existing joint research program and sets out a shared intention to explore new technical, commercial, and regulatory pathways for the valorization of steelmaking slags produced at Tata Steel IJmuiden. Alongside the existing commercial relationship between TSIJ and Ecocem for the valorization of Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBS) in cement & concrete, this new collaboration focuses on Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) slag as an alternative cementitious material, alongside the continued development of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) slag as a supplementary cementitious material.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>By replacing clinker — the most carbon-intensive ingredient in cement — with alternative materials such as slag, the cement industry can significantly cut CO₂ emissions while giving industrial by-products a more valuable and circular use.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The aim of the BOF and EAF slags project is to transform these steel industry by-products into cementitious binders or constituents that can support the decarbonisation of cement and concrete production, while advancing circular economy principles. By developing new pathways for the beneficial use of these materials, the collaboration also aims to increase the availability of low-carbon concrete solutions in the market, providing designers, concrete producers, and contractors with a broader range of sustainable material options.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>“This Memorandum of Understanding reflects a shared ambition to support the transition to more sustainable construction materials,” said <strong>Pieter Roelofsen, Director Strategy, M&A and Partnerships at Tata Steel Nederland</strong>. “By exploring innovative applications of steel slag, a condition for the successful delivery of our Green Steel Project, we aim to contribute to circular value chains while supporting the decarbonization of both the steel and cement industries.”</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span><strong>Olivier Guise, Executive Director of Strategy, Technology and Business Development at Ecocem</strong>, added: “This type of collaboration has the potential to be transformative for the global cement industry. Using 100% scrap in steel production is not yet a realistic scenario and depends on many factors, such as the availability of scrap. However, participating in this research provides valuable insights for producing high‑quality steel that contains 30 to 40% scrap.</span></p><p><span>Machine Learning and digital models are also being used to examine to what extent contaminated scrap can be cleaned for optimal reuse. This requires removing unwanted elements from the scrap. Dr. Rana: “If we succeed, this will be a real win‑win, also because of the critical raw materials such as copper, we will be able to recover.”</span></p><p><span>Alongside universities and research institutes, </span><a href="https://cisma-project.eu/"><span>CiSMA</span></a><span> brings together commercial partners from various sectors including automotive, professional laundry equipment and engineering. Volvo Cars and Electrolux Professional, for example, are researching the (commercial) applicability of this recycled steel in cars and washing machines whilst boosting a circular approach and reducing CO₂ impact. The guiding principle is that this circular steel offers exactly the same properties and performance as traditionally produced high‑quality steel. Dr. Johan Pilthammar, Engineering Technical Specialist at Volvo Cars</span><i><span> </span></i><span>adds: “It’s very important for Volvo Cars to understand if, and how, a higher recycled content is influencing the steel’s behaviour. This project is of high value for us since it will verify that this assumption holds for the investigated steel grades in the forming process. Also, if we see differences with a higher recycled content, we will learn how to adapt to these changes.”</span></p><p><span>“Electrolux Professional&nbsp;remains&nbsp;wholly committed&nbsp;to&nbsp;reducing&nbsp;the&nbsp;climate change impact&nbsp;of our industrial operations. Steel is a key material in our production process&nbsp;and&nbsp;exploring innovative ways of introducing a greater level of circularity is of significant strategic importance&nbsp;to reducing our upstream Scope 3 emissions”, states Andrea Caputo, Sustainability Director BA Laundry, at Electrolux Professional. He concludes: “The CiSMA project&nbsp;has the potential to deliver truly game-changing&nbsp;results,&nbsp;and we are excited to&nbsp;participate&nbsp;in&nbsp;what is likely to be a landmark pilot test.”</span><i><span>&nbsp;</span></i></p><p><span>CiSMA is coordinated by Eurecat (Spain) and consists of 13 partners from five countries, including voestalpine, Volvo Cars, Electrolux Professional, RISE, Blekinge Institute of Technology, ALBA Synchrotron, Aerobase Innovations, the European Steel Technology Platform ESTEP, CSIC, the University of Liège and Tata Steel Nederland.                         <title>Tata Steel Nederland adjusts Board of Management</title>

In addition, the BoM of TSN will consist of two new roles: a Chief Operating Officer (COO), who will be responsible for all operational activities and a Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), who will drive commercial strategy and customer focus. The current roles of Managing Director IJmuiden, Managing Director Downstream and Chief Project & Engineering Officer (CPEO) will cease to exist.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>Akash Latchman, who joined Tata Steel Nederland in November 2024, has been appointed as COO. He will lead the technical implementation of the Green Steel plan in IJmuiden. The current Managing Director IJmuiden, Tom Eussen, will transfer his &nbsp;technical responsibilities to Akash Latchman.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The CCO role is currently vacant and an appointment will be announced in due course. The position of Managing Director Downstream, currently held by Gunilla Saltin, has expired as of 1 July. As a result of this both Tom Eussen and Gunilla Saltin have stepped down as BoM members and will leave the company in due course.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>TV Narendran concludes: "With an adjusted Board of Management, we want to accelerate the transition of TSN into a leading and sustainable steel company. The new structure contributes to more focus and effectiveness. Both climate and health in direct environment expected to benefit from Tata Steel ‘s Green Steel plan.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;</p>]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<img src="https://content.presspage.com/uploads/2939/d422e859-baa3-4ff1-ad75-96479fc618aa/1920_nieuwefabriekengroenstaal3dmodelview1a0hi-res.jpg?10000"><p>The comprehensive report lays bare the environmental and health implications of Tata’s plans to overhaul its steel production at the IJmuiden site. The new steel plant, which will operate using natural gas and green electricity instead of coal, is expected to slash CO₂ emissions by 5 million tonnes. With future integration of hydrogen, bio-methane, and underground carbon storage (CCS), the reductions could go even further – making this the largest single-company CO₂ cut in the Netherlands.&nbsp;<br><br>Hans van den Berg, CEO of Tata Steel Nederland, said: “Our Green Steel plan, developed in close collaboration with trade unions and fully backed by our parent company in India, represents an unprecedented shift – not just for us, but for the entire region. We are moving away from coal, and towards a cleaner, greener future.”&nbsp;<br><br>Jeroen Klumper, Director of the Green Steel Business Transformation, added: “Preparations are already in full swing. The blueprints are ready, we know where the new plants will be built, and we’ve detailed the environmental benefits in the EIA – from reduced nitrogen emissions to a significant drop in odour pollution. We have chosen to publish the EIA ourselves in the interest of transparency. We believe it is important for the local community to understand what our Green Steel plan entails. We’re going beyond legal requirements, using cutting-edge solutions to ensure our site remains future proof for decades to come.”&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Covering ore fields&nbsp;</strong><br>In a direct response to findings by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health (RIVM), Tata Steel will start to cover its ore fields – a move expected to drastically reduce the spread of fine dust in the direct environment. The covering of the ore storage areas is not part of the EIA. It is at the top of the list of additional measures being discussed as part of the Tailor Made Agreement ('Maatwerk-afspraak'). Other measures include, for example, reducing noise pollution and covering the conveyor belts.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Full support for health impact assessment</strong><br>In line with earlier recommendations from the IJmond Health Expert Group, Tata Steel is also supporting the creation of a Health Impact Assessment (HIA). This will translate environmental data from the EIA into tangible health outcomes for the surrounding communities – a move the company fully endorses.<br><br><strong>Public information sessions</strong><br>Tata Steel will host two public information sessions on 8 and 9 July, 2025 (see links below), with representatives from the Province of North Holland and the North Sea Canal Environmental Agency in attendance. Since this involves many deliveries and thus many kilometers, both from its location in IJmuiden and from Tata Steel Tubes in Maastricht, the steel transport is significantly made more sustainable. Converted to CO2 emission reduction, this represents a reduction of 186 tons of CO2 emissions annually. In addition to our CO2-reduced products and Wood4Wood, we are now also achieving CO2 reduction in our transports."</span></p><p><span><strong>In addition to Zeremis Delivered, Tata Steel also offers Zeremis Carbon Lite</strong></span></p><p><span>The reduction of CO2 emissions in the transport chains between Tata Steel Nederland and participating customers is laid down in a </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/zeremis/zeremis-delivered"><span>'Zeremis Delivered'</span></a><a href="#_ftn1"><span>[1]</span></a><span> agreement. The steel customers receive independently verified CO2 reduction statements. Where other materials such as plastic, glass, and aluminium are not infinitely recyclable without a lot of sorting and extra effort, steel is. In fact, lower quality steels can be made even better in terms of quality. We call this "upcycling" in the industry," says Judith Krale, new business manager for scrap at Tata Steel Nederland and responsible for the use of scrap in steel production.</span></p><p><span><strong>‘Can deal’ contributes to 30% scrap use for green, circular steel</strong></span></p><p><span>She is often referred to as the woman of 30%, because Krale works every day to achieve the goal of 30% scrap use in the production of </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green-steel-plan"><span>cleaner, greener, and circular steel by 2030</span></a><span>. This is ambitious, as in 2022 the share of scrap in Tata Steel's steel production was 17%. Krale states: "</span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green/carbon-neutral-steel/dri-technology"><span>With new technologies</span></a><span> for making green steel, we can also recycle more steel. So, we are always looking for more scrap, including packaging tin." To achieve this, Tata Steel Nederland has signed agreements with ten scrap companies in multiple countries: the Nederland, Belgium, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The majority of the tinplate scrap in this 'can deal' comes from the United Kingdom, as that country has been engaged in waste separation for a longer period and is therefore further ahead in waste separation than the Netherlands and its neighboring countries.</span></p><p><span><strong>Increased steel density for a more sustainable end product</strong></span></p><p><span>At Tata Steel Nederland, the old steel, to-be-recycled tin is called 'tin can shred' because the steel cans are crushed in a kind of industrial mincer and flattened into small pieces, with a higher steel density. This has the advantage that its processing in the Oxy Steel Plant is more efficient, which in turn contributes to a more sustainable end product.</span></p><p><span><strong>Steel cans are the recycling champion of the Netherlands</strong></span></p><p><span>In addition to </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/Markets/Packaging"><span>the many advantages of steel food packaging</span></a><span>, such as long shelf life (even outside the refrigerator) and therefore less food waste, steel cans are not only easily recyclable but also relatively easy and inexpensive to separate from other waste due to their magnetic properties. In the Netherlands, steel packaging is therefore the 'recycling champion'. Almost 95% of the packaging steel used in the Netherlands is recycled into new steel. This includes beverage and food cans, aerosol cans, and paint cans. The recycling of iron and steel plays a crucial role in this, and Tata Steel Nederland is working on this every day, aiming to increase the use of scrap from 17% in 2022 to 30% in 2030. This corresponds to 65 billion cans, each containing 13 grams of steel. Tata Steel Nederland aims to further optimize its recycling process. Together with the German steel company Saarstahl and the Austrian voestalpine Group, research has been initiated to explore how digital technology can be utilized to achieve this. Under the name 'Digital Twins for Green Steel' (DiGreeS), the three entities are investigating possibilities for introducing new steel production routes and reducing the ecological footprint.</strong></span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span><strong>Tata Steel Nederland, German and Austrian steel producers are co-innovating for more sustainable, energy-efficient steel production</strong></span></p>]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<img src="https://content.presspage.com/uploads/2939/fa1f979e-53e9-4ea5-aa63-397f73043741/1920_scrap-storage-bunkers-aerial.jpg?10000"><p><span>To be able to significantly increase the use of scrap in steel production in the near future, Tata Steel aims to further </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/circular" target="_blank"><span>optimize the recycling process</span></a><span>. A challenge in this regard is that much of the old steel, such as from old ships or railroad tracks, is too large for regular conveyors and difficult to analyze. Therefore, Tata Steel researches the use of digital laser techniques to analyze the composition of scrap directly from the truck. The process works as follows: the truck carrying scrap enters a specially constructed gate with industrial laser and analysis equipment. The laser vaporizes very small pieces of the steel locally, creating a 'plasma', a small local gas bubble containing all the components of the scrap. This can then be filmed and analyzed with special cameras. Subsequently, depending on the specific composition and criteria, the scrap can be optimally introduced into the recycling process.</span></p><p><span><strong>AI and digital twins for reduced waste and more CO2 reduction</strong></span></p><p><span>Tata Steel researcher Bernard Ennis states: "In this measurement and analysis process, AI is used to more quickly recognize and analyze specific types of steel based on visual characteristics, known as 'scrap image recognition'. The manufacturing process is digitally modeled, or simulated, and tested in a computational model using 'digital twins'. This innovative combination of laser, AI, and digital modeling allows for more efficient sampling, faster scrap deployment logistics, and improved product quality. Moreover, this leads to fewer process errors in scrap deployment and thus less waste and </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green-steel/how-will-we-produce-carbon-neutral-steel" target="_blank"><span>CO2 reduction</span></a><span>." At present, the technique is being researched and developed under the 'DiGreeS program'. The first measurements with the ‘Laser- Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy’<strong> </strong>are scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2025, with the first results being announced. In 2026, the first prototype of the truck portal is expected to be ready for use, and the measurements and modeling will commence. Then, the implementation will follow, including the introduction of the digital twins modelled process.</span></p><p><span><strong>'DiGreeS': Research with German and Austrian steel producers</strong></span></p><p><span>'DiGreeS' is coordinated by the Fraunhofer Institute for Nondestructive Testing IZFP and aims to minimize the ecological footprint of the entire steel value chain through integrated digitalization. Within the 'DiGreeS' program, Tata Steel also collaborates with Saarstahl AG and the voestalpine Group. Saarstahl AG focuses on CO2 reduction of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) techniques at Saarstahl-Ascoval through the use of artificial intelligence based digital models, while voestalpine Group researches energy efficiency and conservation in steel plate processing. Tata Steel will also utilize this new knowledge when replacing the blast furnaces and coke and gas plants with DRI and EAF in the near future, as the traditional steel production process undergoes transformation and coal is replaced by sustainable energy.</span></p>]]></content:encoded><category><![CDATA[Nieuws,news,circularity,green steel,scrap,co2,ai,innovation]]></category>
