Service Centre Gelsenkirchen is Tata Steel Nederland’s third CO2-neutral location

The Gelsenkirchen site is part of Tata Steel Nederland’s Downstream business and is already the third European site of the steel manufacturer to achieve carbon neutrality in its production. This milestone follows the footsteps of the company’s service centres in Naantali, Finland, and Halmstad, Sweden.

“I am incredibly proud of our entire team, which has contributed with great commitment to ensure we operate CO₂-neutral with regard to everything directly linked to our production,” explains Carlos Alván Peña, Managing Director of the Gelsenkirchen Service Centre.

In Gelsenkirchen, around 130 employees process advanced and high-strength steels primarily from Tata Steel’s mill in IJmuiden, the Netherlands, for customers in industries such as automotive, white goods, and construction. Operating a modern production facility, they cut steel coils into strips and sheets of various sizes facilitating the production of pressed parts, profiles and tubes, for example.

Road to a CO₂-neutral site
“Our journey towards CO₂-neutrality began in 2022 with an interdisciplinary team mapping the site’s carbon footprint to identify potential savings,” continues Alván Peña. Since then, the site initially switched to CO₂-neutral liquified gas and subsequently began to use only CO₂-neutral propellant. Together with purchasing colleagues in IJmuiden, Gelsenkirchen ensured that today only renewable energies are purchased from a regional energy supplier.

Alván Peña: “These three steps have ensured that our site has now received the certificate for CO₂ neutrality. This is a massive milestone for us.”

Gelsenkirchen’s achievement aligns with Tata Steel Nederland’s goal of becoming completely CO₂-neutral by 2045. “In addition to major projects, such as the transformation to the production of green steel in IJmuiden, we are also working in other areas to become a more sustainable operating steel company,” explains Gunilla Saltin, Board Member of Tata Steel Nederland and Managing Director of the company’s Downstream business. “Our drive for sustainability in our downstream supply chain has great potential and we are pleased that our colleagues in Gelsenkirchen have taken a big step in this direction. Work is ongoing to ensure that also the other Downstream sites become CO₂-neutral.”

Focus on enhanced circularity and energy independence
Looking ahead, the Gelsenkirchen Service Centre aims to intensify its focus on enhanced circularity, energy independence, waste reduction, and decreased paper consumption. For example, charging stations for electric vehicles were installed in March 2024 and the company is working on introducing Zeremis^® Delivered, the eco-friendly delivery service which was launched by Tata Steel Nederland in November 2023. This enables customers to reduce their scope 3 emissions¹⁾ and other emissions associated with steel transport. It is currently available to customers located within a 300-kilometer driving distance of the Tata Steel sites in the Netherlands and Belgium – including customers in Germany which are within that range. Furthermore, the Gelsenkirchen Service Centre is investigating whether it can enable its suppliers to use fossil-free energy powered trucks.

¹⁾ Greenhouse gas emissions are categorised into three groups or ‘Scopes’ by the GHG Protocol. Scope 1 covers direct emissions from owned or controlled sources. Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating and cooling consumed by the reporting company. Scope 3 includes all other indirect emissions that occur in a company’s value chain.

Restructuring at Tata Steel Nederland’s Tubes business

“Due to the persistent weakness and competition in the precision tube market, we are forced to take measures. We aim to become profitable again and continue delivering high-quality tubes to our customers,” said Jacob Gerkema, Managing Director Tubes. “Regrettably, we must part ways with colleagues at various locations. We will make every effort to minimise forced redundancies and help our employees in finding alternative employment, whether within or outside the company.”

To reduce overcapacity in precision tubes production, 3 welding lines and 2 sawing machines will be taken out of operation. These installations produce high-quality precision tubes for the automotive market, among others.

The request for advice for the intended measures has been submitted to the Works Council and the trade unions have been informed. The restructuring at Tubes is separate from the previously announced reorganisation in IJmuiden.

Tata Steel Nederland halts operations of Tata Steel Istanbul Metal Industry in Turkey

TSIM has achieved numerous successes in Turkey over the past 23 years through its production, sales, and post-sales activities. However, the specificity and limited scale of the production operations in Turkey have been negatively affected financially by rapidly changing market conditions, such as increased competition, price fluctuations, and evolving market demands. These challenges are anticipated to persist in the medium and long term. It has therefore been decided to cease operations in Adapazari.

“The impressive performance displayed by TSIM stands as a significant testament to Tata Steel’s confidence in Turkey. However, with TSIM’s high differentiation of its product and service portfolio in Colors, and considering the extreme market developments, sustaining its business model is no longer feasible,” explains Gunilla Saltin, Member of the Board of Tata Steel Nederland. “The decision to cease operations has not been taken lightly. It is with great regret that, following a detailed review of the business model and strategy, Tata Steel Nederland decided to cease operations at Adapazari. We emphasize the uninterrupted continuity of our sales and after-sales services in Turkey.”

Regrettably, the decision will put ninety jobs at risk. Appropriate information processes with employees and their representatives will begin soon practicable. Tata Steel will explore opportunities to help employees and provide assistance for them. Intensive effort will be made to help employees with new employment. Appropriate redundancy packages will be in place.

It is decided that the closure of production and operations at Adapazari will take place progressively over the coming weeks.

Gunilla Saltin to join Tata Steel Nederland as Managing Director Downstream business and Board Member

With Gunilla’s appointment, Tata Steel Nederland’s Board of Management expands to four members and consists of Hans van den Berg (CEO), Martijn Plaum (CFO), Tom Eussen (Tata Steel IJmuiden), and Gunilla Saltin (Downstream).

Commenting on the appointment, T.V. Narendran, CEO & Managing Director Tata Steel Limited and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Tata Steel Nederland, said: “We are pleased to welcome Gunilla to our company. She brings a wealth of experience to her new role and we’re confident that her perspectives will help to further improve our business performance and achieve our ambition to become the green steel company of choice for our employees and our customers.”

Gunilla, a Swedish national, started her career in R&D engineering at STFI (now part of RISE) in 1988, after which she joined Modo Paper. She has held various leadership positions during her career at Södra Cell, one of the world’s largest pulp producers until mid-2019. She then joined Mondi, a packaging and paper company headquartered in Austria, as Group Technical & Sustainability Director. Currently, Gunilla serves as the CEO of Mondi's Uncoated Fine Paper business.

Gunilla has an MSc in Chemical Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Idaho in the United States, and an Executive MBA the Stockholm School of Economics.
