                        <title>Tata Steel Nederland on the third report of the IJmond Health Expert Group</title>

Tata Steel Nederland attaches great importance to the health of local residents and employees and appreciates the thoroughness of the report.</strong></span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span>The expert group was established in 2023 to provide the Dutch Government with independent advice on improving the protection of the health of people living in the IJmond region. Commenting on the report, Olga Timmerhuis, Director Health, Safety & Environment at Tata Steel Nederland states: “The expert group proposes, among other things, gaining insight into the entire emissions chain: from emissions originating on our site to exposure in the local living environment and the resulting health effects in surrounding communities. Tata Steel Nederland wants to contribute to this effort through its knowledge, data and expertise. We understand the concerns of local residents and want to support an approach that not only measures emissions at the source, but also provides a clear picture of actual exposure in the surrounding environment. We will discuss this with local residents, the expert group and the Ministry so that, together, we can develop clear, practical and effective monitoring criteria. We also recognise that further improvements to our processes are still needed.”</span></p><p><span><strong>Continuous Improvement Through Monitoring</strong></span></p><p><span>Optimising our processes based on measurement results is at the heart of our approach to reducing our impact on the environment. In recent years, we have significantly expanded our monitoring activities, covering more substances, more locations and more frequent measurements, complemented by independent monitoring carried out by external experts.</span></p><p><span>Tata Steel now operates more than 300 emissions monitoring points and a range of monitoring systems, including:</span></p><ul style="list-style-type:disc;"><li data-list-item-id="e36fb2d7c5b5f783da39ce174653d8638"><span>More than 60 electronic noses to monitor ambient air composition;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="e84cf293348a1d46633038d448ebfca2c"><span>Fine particulate matter sensors operated in collaboration with the citizen air-monitoring network;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="ea9d3848457aa3a7f441e7481113992fe"><span>Noise monitoring at more than 10 measurement locations;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="ecb9f748c3044e5272b96f15084e7c1b2"><span>Research into ultrafine particles in the surrounding area.</span></li></ul><p><span>Insights gained from these measurements are used to improve processes and further reduce emissions. Tata Steel publishes its monitoring results online, making them accessible to everyone.</span></p><p><span><strong>Source-Based Measures Remain Essential</strong></span></p><p><span>Alongside monitoring, Tata Steel is strongly focused on reducing emissions through source-based measures and environmental control installations. Examples include:</span></p><ul style="list-style-type:disc;"><li data-list-item-id="e0932c36b8102e2f87b2f48569e4423e1"><span>A new dedusting installation at the Pellet Plant, which has reduced emissions of particulate matter, lead and heavy metals by more than 80%;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="ee09eca06fc868d8ec65c166f6274f788"><span>An off-gas cleaning installation at the Cold Rolling Mill and other measures that have reduced PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) emissions from three sources by more than half;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="e52c528f5ab10d4558f3b0d128564864a"><span>A third extraction system at the Steel Plant.</span></li></ul><p><span><strong>Towards Green Steel</strong></span></p><p><span>Tata Steel Nederland aims to conclude a bespoke agreement with the Dutch Government this year for its </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green-steel-plan" target="_blank"><span>Green Steel project.</span></a><span> This agreement will include additional measures that go beyond legal requirements to further improve the local living environment and reduce health risks. In addition, noise generated during the unloading of scrap will be dampened by the enclosure. With a length of nearly 400 metres, a width of 94 metres and a height of 23 metres, this enclosure will be one of the largest structures of its kind.</span></p><p><span>To further reduce dust dispersion, new conveyor belts will be fully enclosed. Additional misting systems will be installed at various locations on existing belts. For example, conveyor belts at the ore blending yards will be equipped with extra spraying systems to keep raw materials moist and prevent dust formation during transport. This process will be continuously monitored using sensors.</span></p><p><span><strong>Supporting infrastructure and next steps</strong></span></p><p><span>As part of these projects, a new ‘power supply & control’ installation will also be constructed. This will supply electricity to the facilities at ore blending yard 2. In addition, the permit application includes numerous supporting projects required to realise the new setup, such as the relocation of containers, lamp posts and other infrastructure.</span></p><p><span>In the future, ore storage yard 2 will also be partially enclosed. A permit application for this will be submitted at a later stage, once construction of ore blending yard 2 has been completed.</span></p><p><span><strong>Part of broader sustainability efforts</strong></span></p><p><span>The measures are in line with the agreements set out in the </span><a href="https://open.overheid.nl/documenten/8ba9e407-9bf8-492a-b8b2-418dd227a09a/file" target="_blank"><span>Joint Letter of Intent (JLoI)</span></a><span>, concluded at the end of September 2025 between Tata Steel Nederland, parent company Tata Steel Limited in India, and the Dutch government for the greening of steel production through the </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green-steel-plan" target="_blank"><span>Green Steel Project</span></a><span>. This report brings together the company’s strategy, financial results, and developments in the areas of compliance and sustainability. All of this serves one clear objective: the realization of the Green Steel Project.</strong></span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span>The report shows how the company is evolving during a period of change. Many employees work every day on steel that is of great importance to the Netherlands and Europe, while at the same time efforts are being made to transition to a different way of producing steel—with lower emissions and reduced impact on the surrounding environment.</span></p><p><span>We acknowledge that steel production has an impact and that continuous improvement is required. The Green Steel Project plays a central role in this. This project marks a fundamental transformation of steel production in the Netherlands, with the aim of maintaining steel production while making it cleaner, greener, and more circular.</span></p><p><span>This transformation requires adjustments in processes, organization, and ways of working. At the same time, much is at stake: together with suppliers and partners, Tata Steel Nederland supports an ecosystem on which tens of thousands of families depend.</span></p><p><span>With this annual report, Tata Steel Nederland accounts for its results and progress in the financial year from April 1, 2025, through March 31, 2026. (</strong></span><a href="https://www.ecocemglobal.com/"><span><strong>Ecocem</strong></span></a><span><strong>) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their collaboration on the development and potential use of two next-generation steelmaking slags in low‑carbon cement, mortar, and concrete applications across Europe.</strong></span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The MoU builds on an existing joint research program and sets out a shared intention to explore new technical, commercial, and regulatory pathways for the valorization of steelmaking slags produced at Tata Steel IJmuiden. Alongside the existing commercial relationship between TSIJ and Ecocem for the valorization of Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBS) in cement & concrete, this new collaboration focuses on Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) slag as an alternative cementitious material, alongside the continued development of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) slag as a supplementary cementitious material.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>By replacing clinker — the most carbon-intensive ingredient in cement — with alternative materials such as slag, the cement industry can significantly cut CO₂ emissions while giving industrial by-products a more valuable and circular use.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The aim of the BOF and EAF slags project is to transform these steel industry by-products into cementitious binders or constituents that can support the decarbonisation of cement and concrete production, while advancing circular economy principles. By developing new pathways for the beneficial use of these materials, the collaboration also aims to increase the availability of low-carbon concrete solutions in the market, providing designers, concrete producers, and contractors with a broader range of sustainable material options.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>“This Memorandum of Understanding reflects a shared ambition to support the transition to more sustainable construction materials,” said <strong>Pieter Roelofsen, Director Strategy, M&A and Partnerships at Tata Steel Nederland</strong>. “By exploring innovative applications of steel slag, a condition for the successful delivery of our Green Steel Project, we aim to contribute to circular value chains while supporting the decarbonization of both the steel and cement industries.”</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span><strong>Olivier Guise, Executive Director of Strategy, Technology and Business Development at Ecocem</strong>, added: “This type of collaboration has the potential to be transformative for the global cement industry. Using 100% scrap in steel production is not yet a realistic scenario and depends on many factors, such as the availability of scrap. However, participating in this research provides valuable insights for producing high‑quality steel that contains 30 to 40% scrap.</span></p><p><span>Machine Learning and digital models are also being used to examine to what extent contaminated scrap can be cleaned for optimal reuse. This requires removing unwanted elements from the scrap. Dr. Rana: “If we succeed, this will be a real win‑win, also because of the critical raw materials such as copper, we will be able to recover.”</span></p><p><span>Alongside universities and research institutes, </span><a href="https://cisma-project.eu/"><span>CiSMA</span></a><span> brings together commercial partners from various sectors including automotive, professional laundry equipment and engineering. Volvo Cars and Electrolux Professional, for example, are researching the (commercial) applicability of this recycled steel in cars and washing machines whilst boosting a circular approach and reducing CO₂ impact. The guiding principle is that this circular steel offers exactly the same properties and performance as traditionally produced high‑quality steel. Dr. Johan Pilthammar, Engineering Technical Specialist at Volvo Cars</span><i><span> </span></i><span>adds: “It’s very important for Volvo Cars to understand if, and how, a higher recycled content is influencing the steel’s behaviour. This project is of high value for us since it will verify that this assumption holds for the investigated steel grades in the forming process. Also, if we see differences with a higher recycled content, we will learn how to adapt to these changes.”</span></p><p><span>“Electrolux Professional&nbsp;remains&nbsp;wholly committed&nbsp;to&nbsp;reducing&nbsp;the&nbsp;climate change impact&nbsp;of our industrial operations. Steel is a key material in our production process&nbsp;and&nbsp;exploring innovative ways of introducing a greater level of circularity is of significant strategic importance&nbsp;to reducing our upstream Scope 3 emissions”, states Andrea Caputo, Sustainability Director BA Laundry, at Electrolux Professional. He concludes: “The CiSMA project&nbsp;has the potential to deliver truly game-changing&nbsp;results,&nbsp;and we are excited to&nbsp;participate&nbsp;in&nbsp;what is likely to be a landmark pilot test.”</span><i><span>&nbsp;</span></i></p><p><span>CiSMA is coordinated by Eurecat (Spain) and consists of 13 partners from five countries, including voestalpine, Volvo Cars, Electrolux Professional, RISE, Blekinge Institute of Technology, ALBA Synchrotron, Aerobase Innovations, the European Steel Technology Platform ESTEP, CSIC, the University of Liège and Tata Steel Nederland. At those temperatures,&nbsp;the zinc coating on&nbsp;the steel&nbsp;can melt, resulting&nbsp;in cracking. For that reason, manufacturers often use&nbsp;aluminium‑silicon coated steels. Those can withstand&nbsp;high temperatures&nbsp;but offer lower corrosion resistance. “By developing this new high‑quality steel grades, we address these limitations,” says Dr. Radhakanta Rana, metallurgist at Tata Steel Nederland and project leader of&nbsp;WarP-AHSS. The prestigious event, also known as the Wimbledon of chess, was held from 16 January to 1 February in Wijk aan Zee. The tournament has a long tradition and has brought the world’s best chess players to the Dutch coastal town for decades.</span></p><p><span><strong>Thrilling Finale</strong></span></p><p><span>During the final weekend, the battle for the title remained exciting until the very last moment; no fewer than five grandmasters still had a chance to win. In the end, the 21-year-old Uzbek claimed the title.</span></p><p><span>Tournament director Jeroen van den Berg responded enthusiastically: “What a tremendous achievement by Nodirbek Abdusattorov. It is more than deserved that Nodirbek wins here; he has been playing at a high and consistent level throughout the tournament. In recent years he came very close, and now he captures the title. I warmly congratulate him and, of course, invite him to return next year to Wijk aan Zee to defend his title.”</span></p><p><span><strong>Global Interest and Record Numbers</strong></span></p><p><span>This year, the Tata Steel Chess Tournament once again reached a worldwide audience. The power plants 24 and 25 in Velsen-Noord generate electricity predominantly from the residual gases from the steel production process. This electricity is used by TSN in its operational processes.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0px;text-align:left;"><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;">The third unit is IJmond 01, a combined heat and power plant on the Tata Steel site in IJmuiden. This unit is fuelled by the residual gases from the steel production process and it produces electricity and steam. This electricity and steam are also used in the steel plant's operational processes. As part of this strategy, the company is replacing a significant portion of road and water transport with rail freight, particularly for deliveries to customers in southern Poland and Slovakia. Previously, steel was shipped by truck and vessel to nearby ports, followed by approximately 600 kilometres of road transport. Driven by our sustainability goals and the need for more robust and efficient supply chains, we have significantly scaled up rail freight. This new route offers a reliable, sustainable and efficient solution with reduced Scope 3 emissions. It also saves packaging materials, as the steel no longer requires seaworthy protection, and it’s faster – within 30 hours, the steel reaches the customer.”</span></p><p><span>This initiative forms part of the mobility strategy of Tata Steel Nederland, optimising logistics in close collaboration with partners across the supply chain. For destinations in Eastern Europe, three trains loaded with steel coils will now depart every two weeks. In the Netherlands and Germany, these trains run on green electricity.                         <title>Tata Steel signs the non-binding Joint Letter of Intent with the Government of the Netherlands and the Province of North-Holland on Integrated Decarbonisation and Health measures</title>

                        <guid>https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/nieuws/en/tata-steel-signs-the-non-binding-joint-letter-of-intent-with-the-government-of-the-netherlands-and-the-province-of-north-holland-on-integrated-decarbonisation-and-health-measures</guid><pp:caseid>723503</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p><span><strong>Pursuant to extensive discussions, the Government of the Netherlands and the province of North-Holland, Tata Steel and Tata Steel Nederland (“TSN”) have agreed an intended framework for the integrated project in TSN and signed a non-binding Joint Letter of Intent (JLoI) for the first phase of transition to </strong></span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/emissions/carbon-dioxide"><span><strong>low CO2 steel production</strong></span></a><span><strong> and to improve the healthy living environment around the IJmuiden site.&nbsp;</strong></span></p><p><span>The JLoI sets out the aims and objectives of the parties but is neither binding on the execution of the Projects or the Subsidy, nor with respect to any of the other commitments made herein by any of the Parties, with the exception of the commitment of the Parties on good faith negotiations towards a tailor-made agreement including the commitments related specifically to the period prior to the tailor-made agreement. Both parties will continue working towards the final tailor-made agreement in the coming months including after the elections and the formation of the new government in the Netherlands. The final investment decision will be considered by the Tata Steel Board in the process to come to the final binding tailor-made agreement.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Mr. T V Narendran, CEO & Managing Director, Tata Steel and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Tata Steel Nederland: “We would like to thank Minister Hermans, her colleagues in the Cabinet and the team from the Dutch Government and from the province of North-Holland who have engaged constructively and painstakingly with us over the last 2 years to complete this first step in our journey towards creating a sustainable long-term future for Tata Steel Nederland.</span></p><p><span>There are a lot of issues to resolve and work to be done before us. This includes work we have to do internally, including the completion of the engineering preparedness for this very complex transition & addressing statutory and regulatory aspects related to the coke and gas plants. It also involves external issues including satisfactory resolution of critical policy matters impacting the investment case, obtaining permits for the projects, and agreeing on detailed terms in the binding agreement, before we can consider proceeding towards the investment decision. We are also closely monitoring the policy developments in EU on CBAM and in the Dutch Parliament regarding the challenges of the 2030 CO2 reduction targets. In parallel, we are also looking at prioritisation, optimisation and sequencing of the capex spend such that it is affordable for all stakeholders.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>We are committed to working with all stakeholders including the government on resolving these points before the finalisation of the tailor-made agreement. The size and scale of the project is very large, and we are working to ensure that Tata Steel Nederland is ready for it, by improving its financial and operating performance and restoring it to its position as one of the most competitive steel making sites in Europe. Our Unions have supported this transition project and their continued support is essential to secure a robust sustainable future for TSN. We also want to assure our customers that our transition plans are based on ensuring an uninterrupted supply chain across our product portfolio.”</span></p><p><span>Through the first phase of the Integrated Health measures and Decarbonisation Project, TSN aims to achieve the following:&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>- TSN aims to de-commission the existing Blast Furnace #7 and Coke and Gas Plant 2 and construct a DRP intended to initially be operational on natural gas and an </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/steelmaking/plants/electric-arc-furnace"><span>EAF with increased scrap-intake</span></a><span>. This would reduce annual scope 1 CO2 emissions by 5.4 Mta relative to the asis maximum of 12.6 Mta. Subsequently, Carbon Capture and Storage will be added to the DRP to further reduce TSN's annual scope 1 CO2 emissions by 0.6 Mta. Finally, biomethane and/or hydrogen will be used when economically available at scale, to further reduce TSN's annual scope 1 CO2 emissions by 1.2 Mta on phased basis (all subject to margins of uncertainty).&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>- In order to improve the healthy living environment, and reduce its contribution to coarse and </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/emissions/particulate-matter-and-air-quality"><span>fine dust (PM10) immissions</span></a><span>, annual emissions of individual substances of very high concern – NOx emissions, SO2 emissions, odour emissions and noise, TSN aims to undertake </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/measures/coverings"><span>specific beyond-legal measures</span></a><span>, beyond the de-carbonisation of its assets. TSN will cover the blending pile of the pellet plant, build a windbreak for the blending pile of the sinter plant, cover the iron ore yards, invest in dust reduction measures at slag processing facilities, and noise & odour reduction measures. These sub-projects are expected to have a shorter construction time and be delivered before the end of this decade. TSN will also cover the iron ore yards for the volume of ore needed for the new DRP-facility, and cover the steel slag cooling of the new EAF (to be completed at the same time as the respective installations).&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>- TSN aims to implement new processing methods with the aim to improve the application of existing Basic Oxygen Steelmaking slag and future EAF slag. It also aims to increase its intake of scrap from 17% in 2019 to 30%, to improve circularity.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Both parties have agreed, certain conditions as necessary to be completed / satisfied to arrive at the tailor-made agreement and the JLoI contains termination clauses for both Tata Steel and the Dutch government. For Tata Steel this includes policies relating to the national CO2 levy resulting in a significant cost to TSN; network tariffs significantly increasing relative to prevailing levels, indexed for inflation; and policies regarding steel slag affecting the business significantly in a negative way. For the Dutch government and for Tata Steel it is also essential that TSN adequately addresses all its legacy liabilities, in particular relating to the Coke and Gas Plants. The Parties have agreed to develop and finalise the project schedule in the tailor-made agreement.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>TSN has not yet completed the full engineering of the integrated project and therefore not finalised the total spend. The capital expenditure spend and phasing will be finalised at the stage of signing of the tailor-made agreement and at the point of making the final investment decision, and the project execution will also be spread over several years. The Dutch government intends to support up to €2 Billion under the JLoI. Additionally, TSN has made an application to the EU Innovation Fund for ~€0.3 Billion. The site is replacing its two natural gas-powered incinerators with an Electrical Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO). The RTO is cutting-edge technology and is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately&nbsp;7,500 tons per year.</strong></span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>Reduction of CO₂ Emissions by up to 7,500 Tons Annually</p>]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<img src="https://content.presspage.com/uploads/2939/09c3f267-fc45-449d-bcc1-d5e80b4d3e13/1920_medres_tata-steel-corporate-downstream-europe-colors-maubege-0008.jpg?10000"><p><span>TSM specialises in painting steel, a process that releases&nbsp;volatile organic compounds (VOCs)&nbsp;during the drying phase. To prevent these VOCs from entering the atmosphere, they are currently incinerated at high temperatures using natural gas, resulting in significant CO₂ emissions. The new RTO system, powered by&nbsp;electricity, will not only eliminate the need for fossil fuels but also enhance energy efficiency and environmental performance.</span></p><p><span>Jens Lauber, Managing Director of </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/about-tata-steel/business-units/colors#colors"><span>Tata Steel Colors</span></a><span>, emphasises the strategic importance of this transition: “Together with Tata Steel Nederland, we are committed </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green-steel-plan"><span>to producing greener, cleaner, and more circular steel</span></a><span>. He will lead the technical implementation of the Green Steel plan in IJmuiden. The new steel plant, which will operate using natural gas and green electricity instead of coal, is expected to slash CO₂ emissions by 5 million tonnes. With future integration of hydrogen, bio-methane, and underground carbon storage (CCS), the reductions could go even further – making this the largest single-company CO₂ cut in the Netherlands.&nbsp;<br><br>Hans van den Berg, CEO of Tata Steel Nederland, said: “Our Green Steel plan, developed in close collaboration with trade unions and fully backed by our parent company in India, represents an unprecedented shift – not just for us, but for the entire region. We are moving away from coal, and towards a cleaner, greener future.”&nbsp;<br><br>Jeroen Klumper, Director of the Green Steel Business Transformation, added: “Preparations are already in full swing. We’re going beyond legal requirements, using cutting-edge solutions to ensure our site remains future proof for decades to come.”&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Covering ore fields&nbsp;</strong><br>In a direct response to findings by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health (RIVM), Tata Steel will start to cover its ore fields – a move expected to drastically reduce the spread of fine dust in the direct environment. The covering of the ore storage areas is not part of the EIA. It is at the top of the list of additional measures being discussed as part of the Tailor Made Agreement ('Maatwerk-afspraak'). Other measures include, for example, reducing noise pollution and covering the conveyor belts.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Full support for health impact assessment</strong><br>In line with earlier recommendations from the IJmond Health Expert Group, Tata Steel is also supporting the creation of a Health Impact Assessment (HIA). In conventional processes, this generates heat due to friction, requiring cooling water that must then be washed off the cans—an energy- and water-intensive process. Tata Steel’s new line doesn’t need any of that. Thanks to the use of </span><a href="https://products.tatasteelnederland.com/brands/packaging/protact"><span>innovative <strong>Protact®</strong></span></a><span> steel and advanced internal cooling of the tooling, cans can now be formed in a dry process. This eliminates the need for emulsified water, reducing energy use and cutting the investment costs for customers.</span></p><p><span><strong>Food safety for the future</strong></span><br><span>Protact is a polymer-coated steel that reduces friction during forming. “The polymer layer also ensures that the can meets all future food safety standards,” says Hans van der Weijde, Director of R&D at Tata Steel Nederland. “There’s no need to apply a lacquer to the steel. While lacquer is still allowed under current regulations, we see a clear trend toward phasing out these chemical coatings. Lacquered cans also often contain tin. Protact allows for a shorter and cleaner production line.”</span></p><p><span><strong>Working with customers</strong></span><br><span>The new line can produce up to 400 cans per minute—25% more than the industry standard of 320. The machine at Tata Steel serves as a proof of concept, where customers can see the dry forming process with Protact in action at full industrial speeds. “That collaboration with the customer is crucial,” says Joris Essing, Marketing Manager for packaging steel at Tata Steel Nederland. “We have the expertise in the dry process, but the customer has to make it work on their own production lines. We work closely together to make that happen.”</span></p><p><span>That collaboration has already delivered results in the packaging market. One example is </span><a href="https://products.tatasteelnederland.com/expertise/packaging/case-studies/calvo-vuelca-facil"><span>Tata Steel’s partnership with <strong>Grupo Calvo</strong></span></a><span>, which led to the development of an innovative Protact tuna can. The polymer layer applied to the steel reduces the need for oil to keep the tuna fresh and make it easy to remove from the can. The packaging is also lighter, due to more efficient material use, which brings transport benefits.</span></p><p><span><strong>Champion of recycling</strong></span><br><a href="https://products.tatasteelnederland.com/products/packaging"><span>Steel food cans offer several advantages</span></a><span>: long shelf life even without refrigeration, reduced food waste, and excellent recyclability. Thanks to their magnetic properties, steel cans are relatively easy and cost-effective to separate from other waste streams. Furthermore, for extra strength and stiffness, these parts can feature very intricate edges, but it is precisely these edges that are susceptible to cracking during the forming of the parts in the press shop. For the development of this new advanced steel type, we have developed specific test methods with which we can assess risks of edge fracture and measure the fracture toughness of steel types. With the new knowledge and insights obtained from this, we have been able to develop HyperFlange, which is both strong and edge ductile."</span></p><p><span><strong>Higher press shop efficiency and robust manufacturing with HyperFlange</strong></span></p><p><span>Edge cracking is one of the most common pain points in chassis press shops. With this newly developed steel type, we can address this challenge with and for our customers. Moe Ziaran, Marketing Manager Automotive Chassis & Components at Tata Steel Nederland, states: "Thanks to the product optimizations we have made with HyperFlange, customers will experience less edge cracks, minimized material loss, and reduced production line interruptions, all of which contribute to increased productivity and efficiency in the press shops of car manufacturers." Converted to CO2 emission reduction, this represents a reduction of 186 tons of CO2 emissions annually. In addition to our CO2-reduced products and Wood4Wood, we are now also achieving CO2 reduction in our transports."</span></p><p><span><strong>In addition to Zeremis Delivered, Tata Steel also offers Zeremis Carbon Lite</strong></span></p><p><span>The reduction of CO2 emissions in the transport chains between Tata Steel Nederland and participating customers is laid down in a </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/zeremis/zeremis-delivered"><span>'Zeremis Delivered'</span></a><a href="#_ftn1"><span>[1]</span></a><span> agreement. The steel customers receive independently verified CO2 reduction statements. This major step towards the sustainability of mutual transport comes on top of the Memorandum of Understanding that MCB and Tata Steel Nederland previously agreed upon for the delivery of CO2-reduced steel and tubes.</span></p><p><span><strong>On the way together towards clean, green circular steel</strong></span></p><p><span>Tata Steel Nederland is transitioning to become a </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green-steel-plan"><span>clean, green, and circular steel producer.</span></a><span> By 2030, Tata Steel aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 40% and to be climate-neutral by 2045. Where other materials such as plastic, glass, and aluminium are not infinitely recyclable without a lot of sorting and extra effort, steel is. In fact, lower quality steels can be made even better in terms of quality. We call this "upcycling" in the industry," says Judith Krale, new business manager for scrap at Tata Steel Nederland and responsible for the use of scrap in steel production.</span></p><p><span><strong>‘Can deal’ contributes to 30% scrap use for green, circular steel</strong></span></p><p><span>She is often referred to as the woman of 30%, because Krale works every day to achieve the goal of 30% scrap use in the production of </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green-steel-plan"><span>cleaner, greener, and circular steel by 2030</span></a><span>. This is ambitious, as in 2022 the share of scrap in Tata Steel's steel production was 17%. Krale states: "</span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green/carbon-neutral-steel/dri-technology"><span>With new technologies</span></a><span> for making green steel, we can also recycle more steel. So, we are always looking for more scrap, including packaging tin." To achieve this, Tata Steel Nederland has signed agreements with ten scrap companies in multiple countries: the Nederland, Belgium, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The majority of the tinplate scrap in this 'can deal' comes from the United Kingdom, as that country has been engaged in waste separation for a longer period and is therefore further ahead in waste separation than the Netherlands and its neighboring countries.</span></p><p><span><strong>Increased steel density for a more sustainable end product</strong></span></p><p><span>At Tata Steel Nederland, the old steel, to-be-recycled tin is called 'tin can shred' because the steel cans are crushed in a kind of industrial mincer and flattened into small pieces, with a higher steel density. This has the advantage that its processing in the Oxy Steel Plant is more efficient, which in turn contributes to a more sustainable end product.</span></p><p><span><strong>Steel cans are the recycling champion of the Netherlands</strong></span></p><p><span>In addition to </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/Markets/Packaging"><span>the many advantages of steel food packaging</span></a><span>, such as long shelf life (even outside the refrigerator) and therefore less food waste, steel cans are not only easily recyclable but also relatively easy and inexpensive to separate from other waste due to their magnetic properties. In the Netherlands, steel packaging is therefore the 'recycling champion'. Almost 95% of the packaging steel used in the Netherlands is recycled into new steel. This includes beverage and food cans, aerosol cans, and paint cans. The recycling of iron and steel plays a crucial role in this, and Tata Steel Nederland is working on this every day, aiming to increase the use of scrap from 17% in 2022 to 30% in 2030. This corresponds to 65 billion cans, each containing 13 grams of steel. Tata Steel Nederland aims to further optimize its recycling process. Together with the German steel company Saarstahl and the Austrian voestalpine Group, research has been initiated to explore how digital technology can be utilized to achieve this. Under the name 'Digital Twins for Green Steel' (DiGreeS), the three entities are investigating possibilities for introducing new steel production routes and reducing the ecological footprint.</strong></span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span><strong>Tata Steel Nederland, German and Austrian steel producers are co-innovating for more sustainable, energy-efficient steel production</strong></span></p>]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<img src="https://content.presspage.com/uploads/2939/fa1f979e-53e9-4ea5-aa63-397f73043741/1920_scrap-storage-bunkers-aerial.jpg?10000"><p><span>To be able to significantly increase the use of scrap in steel production in the near future, Tata Steel aims to further </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/circular" target="_blank"><span>optimize the recycling process</span></a><span>. A challenge in this regard is that much of the old steel, such as from old ships or railroad tracks, is too large for regular conveyors and difficult to analyze. Therefore, Tata Steel researches the use of digital laser techniques to analyze the composition of scrap directly from the truck. The process works as follows: the truck carrying scrap enters a specially constructed gate with industrial laser and analysis equipment. The laser vaporizes very small pieces of the steel locally, creating a 'plasma', a small local gas bubble containing all the components of the scrap. This can then be filmed and analyzed with special cameras. Subsequently, depending on the specific composition and criteria, the scrap can be optimally introduced into the recycling process.</span></p><p><span><strong>AI and digital twins for reduced waste and more CO2 reduction</strong></span></p><p><span>Tata Steel researcher Bernard Ennis states: "In this measurement and analysis process, AI is used to more quickly recognize and analyze specific types of steel based on visual characteristics, known as 'scrap image recognition'. The manufacturing process is digitally modeled, or simulated, and tested in a computational model using 'digital twins'. This innovative combination of laser, AI, and digital modeling allows for more efficient sampling, faster scrap deployment logistics, and improved product quality. Moreover, this leads to fewer process errors in scrap deployment and thus less waste and </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green-steel/how-will-we-produce-carbon-neutral-steel" target="_blank"><span>CO2 reduction</span></a><span>." At present, the technique is being researched and developed under the 'DiGreeS program'. The first measurements with the ‘Laser- Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy’<strong> </strong>are scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2025, with the first results being announced. In 2026, the first prototype of the truck portal is expected to be ready for use, and the measurements and modeling will commence. Then, the implementation will follow, including the introduction of the digital twins modelled process.</span></p><p><span><strong>'DiGreeS': Research with German and Austrian steel producers</strong></span></p><p><span>'DiGreeS' is coordinated by the Fraunhofer Institute for Nondestructive Testing IZFP and aims to minimize the ecological footprint of the entire steel value chain through integrated digitalization. Within the 'DiGreeS' program, Tata Steel also collaborates with Saarstahl AG and the voestalpine Group. Saarstahl AG focuses on CO2 reduction of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) techniques at Saarstahl-Ascoval through the use of artificial intelligence based digital models, while voestalpine Group researches energy efficiency and conservation in steel plate processing. Tata Steel will also utilize this new knowledge when replacing the blast furnaces and coke and gas plants with DRI and EAF in the near future, as the traditional steel production process undergoes transformation and coal is replaced by sustainable energy.</span></p>]]></content:encoded><category><![CDATA[Nieuws,news,circularity,green steel,scrap,co2,ai,innovation]]></category>

                        <title>Scientific Research for Even Greener Wind Parks</title>

The simple answer is 'yes'. Together with research institutions and other partners, Tata Steel Nederland investigates how the new generation of supporting structures for wind turbines can be built to be just as robust, with less steel, but strong and competitive. The research involves intensive collaboration with stakeholders in the wind turbine market. The goal is to commence a pilot tubular tower for a wind turbine in 2027.</strong></span></p><p><span>Tata Steel contributes daily to the green transition that our country is currently undergoing, in multiple ways. This includes supplying steel produces with more scrap and less CO2 emissions, improving energy efficiency in all steel production processes, providing stronger steel to enhance vehicle safety and reduce fuel consumption, delivering smart steel to minimize total losses, producing tinplate to extend the shelf life of canned food and reduce food waste, supplying high-tech steel for longer-lasting and leak-resistant batteries.</span></p><p><span><strong>Less steel, same strength, more competitive</strong></span></p><p><span>Wind parks have not yet been mentioned in this sum-up. Why not? Because supporting structures for wind turbines are made of very thick steel plates, and machined ring flanges which are often made of more than 100 mm thick steel. Tata Steel Nederland specializes in high-quality thinner steel, in the form of coiled steel. Flat-rolled steel, which is used in our cars, washing machines, and food cans. Wind towers are made from plate thickness ranging from 40 to 100 mm, which are welded into rings, then rings welded into tower segments and then connected in-situ by ring flanges into a tower.</span></p><p><span>However, this may change soon, as a team of researchers from Tata Steel Nederland, in collaboration with, amongst others TU Delft, explores constructing wind towers with thinner steel plates that are just as strong and more competitive, representing a new advancement in wind tower construction. Hans van der Weijde, R&D Director Tata Steel: “This involves researching new and alternative forms of steel structures and connections, such as wind turbine assembly with (stiffened) panels or with spiral-like steel structures or with double-walled surfaces. Various industry stakeholders are involved in this research, as any technical innovations must also be practical and feasible.” This industrial consortium is led by Tata Steel Netherlands and TU Delft. Dr. Milan Veljkovic, Professor Steel and Composite Structures states: ”The wind turbines’ double-skin shell is a hybrid structure requiring innovation in connecting tower segments. Our main motivation is to improve the sustainability and competitiveness of such towers.”&nbsp;</span></p><p><span><strong>Innovation for an extended lifespan</strong></span></p><p><span>In addition to reducing steel usage, another focus of this research is to extend the lifespan of wind towers. This goal aligns with the redeveloping of wind turbines to last longer. Wind towers also have to meet these targets in the nearby future. The current generation of wind turbines typically has a lifespan of 20 to 25 years. With these new development goals, a lifespan of more than 30 years is being aimed for. Furthermore, this new generation of even more sustainable wind turbines should be suitable for both onshore and offshore applications. With the planned green steel investments in IJmuiden, Tata Steel aims to make a significant contribution to the production of green energy using wind turbines manufactured from green steel.</span></p>]]></content:encoded><category><![CDATA[news,innovatie,Energie,science]]></category>

This knowledge contributes to more efficient energy use, more effective steel production, and the green energy transition.</strong></span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span><strong>While astronauts have a beautiful view of our planet, they also perform numerous (scientific) experiments and studies that contribute to sustainable innovation.&nbsp;</strong></span></p>]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<img src="https://content.presspage.com/uploads/2939/8df37066-ca8d-461e-8ccd-bd3e83daa7a1/1920_issemlinstallation2014gerst.jpg?10000"><p><span>As we speak, steel is being researched in the ISS. This concerns steel that can be used for electric motors. The quality of this steel largely determines the efficiency of motors in, for example, electric cars. This directly contributes to the energy transition. These types of steel have a complex structure that partly arises during casting. The knowledge gained from this experiment is used in the casting process to prevent errors and to achieve better steel for this application.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span><strong>ESA and Tata Steel Nederland Collaboration</strong></span></p><p><span>It is very imaginative; steel melted in space and then cooled and solidified again in a 'high tech' monitored process. In this co-production, Tata Steel Nederland provides specifically prepared steel samples and knowledge. ESA is responsible for the execution of the scientific experiment. The knowledge resulting from the various studies is available to everyone. Materials expert Wim Sillekens is involved in the space steel project from ESTEC/ESA and states: "For science, all the materials research within the 'Space for Science' program has already resulted in more than 1,600 publications, including a number of scientific articles together with Tata Steel."</span></p><p><span><strong>Why steel research in space?</strong></span></p><p><span>We ask this question to the Argentinian-Dutch scientist Dr. Begona Santillana. She works in the 'Research & Development' department of Tata Steel and researches the solidification of steel. Dr. Santillana is the initiator and manager of this steel research in space and explains its added value: "All the steel that surrounds you has once been liquid. And it is precisely in that process from liquid to solidified steel that much can go wrong. The solidification of liquid steel at very high temperatures, around 1500 degrees Celsius, is influenced by mechanical, thermodynamic, and thermo-physical properties. In the lab, we investigate all these properties, but the steel samples used for this purpose are also subject to gravity. In space, we don't have that problem, which leads to purer data.</span></p><p><span><strong>How does it work?</strong></span></p><p><span>Steel pellets of less than 10 grams, prepared by TSN, are placed on Earth in a batch with other samples in a kind of carousel and transported to the ISS by rocket. There, the carousel is placed in the double-walled 'Electro-Magnetic Levitator' (EML). In the EML, the steel pellets are then melted and solidified in a number of cycles. This happens while the astronauts are sleeping to prevent measurement errors due to movement. The process is monitored, and the data go 'real-time' to the 'Microgravity User Support Center', a support center of the ISS in Cologne, for data collection, among other things. Upon return to Earth, the steel samples go to Tata Steel Nederland and the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom for further research.</span></p><p><span><strong>Energy saving and sustainability through steel research in space</strong></span></p><p><span>For applications of steel, preventing errors in the process is crucial, and precise knowledge of solidification temperature and other thermo-physical properties is important. Dr. Santillana: "Through the knowledge obtained from this scientific research, we can realize the production of steel more efficiently. Moreover, thanks to the knowledge gained, we can produce different types of steel with fewer process problems. Indirectly, this leads to energy savings and a better product." Wim Sillekens (ESA) adds: "In our collaboration with Tata Steel Nederland, we have acquired a lot of knowledge about steel properties with an accuracy that cannot be measured in any other way. Many of the materials investigated in the EML are related to sustainability; in addition to steel, these are, for example, hard-magnetic materials and semiconductor materials, for applications in wind turbines and solar panels. Surrounding the raw material fields on the site of Tata Steel Nederland in IJmuiden, there is now a windbreaker approximately 1 kilometer long and 18 meters high. Made of perforated steel, the holes in the windscreen help reduce the impact of the wind on the material, thereby decreasing the dispersal of dust.</strong></span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span>Reduction in dust deposition</span></p>]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span><strong>Tom Eussen, member of the Board of Management of Tata Steel Nederland and responsible for the operations at the IJmuiden site</strong>: "</span><i><span>Compliments to all employees and other stakeholders who have made the windbreaker possible. The purpose of the windbreaker is to reduce the nuisance of dust in the vicinity of the factories in IJmuiden. In combination with other measures, it is expected that the deposition of dust in the immediate residential area will significantly decrease. In addition to the windbreaker, we are also working hard on improvements at our raw material logistics to further reduce the dispersal of dust</span></i><span>."</span></p><p><span>From the raw material fields, the smallest particles can be blown up and settle in the surrounding area as dust. The windbreaker is designed to counteract this. It is expected that the windbreaker, together with other Roadmap Plus measures, will result in a 65% reduction in dust deposition.</span></p><p><span><strong>In consultation with local residents</strong></span></p><p><span>The windbreaker has been adorned with a painting by the artists of Spatzuiver. The design for this was created in consultation with local residents, the architectural review board, the municipality, and Tata Steel Nederland. The colors were chosen to ensure that the screen blends in with the surroundings as much as possible.</span></p><p><span><strong>Environmental improvement program Roadmap Plus</strong></span></p><p><span>The windbreaker is part of a larger environmental improvement program that also includes, for example, extraction hoods and fabric filters in the factories. In December 2023, the largest vacuum cleaner in the Netherlands was put into operation at the Pellet plant, the Blast Furnaces received 6 additional extraction hoods, and the Steel Plant was equipped with a third extraction system that was built through the roof while the plant remained operational.</span></p><p><span>These measures, like the windbreaker, are part of the Roadmap Plus: a comprehensive environmental improvement program that was established to minimize the nuisance for the surrounding area. Additionally, the company’s competitive position is also under pressure due to the high costs incurred by Tata Steel Nederland, such as the high cost of the electricity network, energy costs and the additional Dutch carbon tax.</span></p><p><span><strong>Clean, green, and circular steel remains the target on the horizon</strong>&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;text-align:justify;"><span>Tata Steel is anticipating deteriorating market trends and prioritises </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en" target="_blank"><span>the company's green transition&nbsp;</span></a><span> at the same time. For this reason, Tata Steel Nederland is adopting cost-saving measures that directly saves money, including measures in procurement, sales and inventory management. In addition to this, a partial vacancy freeze is implemented as well as a significant reduction of training and business trips. At the same time, Tata Steel Nederland continues its steel production unabated in order to supply customers directly when the market recovers. Service Centre Maastricht is part of TSDE and consists of two locations: Multisteel and Feijen. Multisteel processes steel coils in the thinner segment, such as cold-rolled and galvanized steel.
