                        <title>Statement on the decision by the Public Prosecution Service (OM) to prosecute Tata Steel IJmuiden (TSIJ)</title>

                        <guid>https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/nieuws/en/statement-on-the-decision-by-the-public-prosecution-service-om-to-prosecute-tata-steel-ijmuiden-tsij</guid><pp:caseid>762557</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p><span>The decision by the Public Prosecution Service (OM) to prosecute Tata Steel IJmuiden (TSIJ) for “allowing undercooked coke to occur” in the Coke and Gas Plants (KGF) 1 and 2 and for not reporting this in a timely manner deeply affects the company.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>TSIJ considers being a good neighbor to the local community of fundamental importance and is fully committed to minimizing its impact on the surrounding area wherever possible. The company takes concerns and criticism seriously and remains committed to implementing measures to drive continuous improvement. Tata Steel Nederland's CO₂ intensity is approximately 1.66 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of crude steel produced, placing the company among the more CO₂-efficient integrated steel producers globally.</span></p><p><span>TSIJ has for some time been engaged in discussions with the North Sea Canal Area Environmental Service (Omgevingsdienst Noordzeekanaalgebied), the relevant supervisory authority, regarding the occurrence of so‑called “undercooked coke.” Coke has a double function: to reduce the iron ores to iron and as a fuel used to reach high temperatures in blast furnaces, in order to melt iron ore for the production of liquid pig iron. TSIJ produces this coke in plants KGF 1 and 2, approximately 135,000 batches (pushes) per year.</span></p><p><span>Occasionally, a batch was not fully “cooked,” resulting in a short-term peak emission. TSIJ seeks to minimize such undercooked coke, but in an industrial production process of this scale it is technically unavoidable that, on occasion, a coke batch is not fully cooked. Therefore, an absolute guarantee to prevent undercooked coke can never be given.</span></p><p><span>TSIJ has been engaged in an in-depth technical discussion on this subject with the Environmental Service for a considerable period. Based on those discussions and the measures taken, TSIJ has implemented substantial and tangible improvements since 2020. As a result, the number of instances of “undercooked coke” has been reduced by 98%; in the period from January 2020 to May 2026, this averaged less than 0.011%. This is below the industry average. In recent years, only a few cases have occurred out of 135,000 pushes per year, with 1 instance in 2023, and zero in 2024 and 2025. For these reasons, TSIJ considers the allegations &nbsp;fundamentally to be unjustified.</span></p><p><span>TSIJ also considers it unnecessary to initiate criminal proceedings regarding a limited number of KGF incidents from the past, which have in fact been the subject of technical improvements. In light of the fact that TSIJ has long been in dialogue with the Environmental Service on undercooked coke, TSIJ believes this case adds nothing. Moreover, KGF 1 and 2 will in any event be fully closed in the coming years as part of the Green Steel Project, through which TSIJ will transition to a more sustainable method of steel production.</span></p><p><span>The allegations are being further reviewed by TSIJ. A substantive defence will, of course, be presented during the court proceedings.</span></p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[statements]]></category>

                        <title>Tata Steel Nederland on the third report of the IJmond Health Expert Group</title>

Tata Steel Nederland attaches great importance to the health of local residents and employees and appreciates the thoroughness of the report.</strong></span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span>The expert group was established in 2023 to provide the Dutch Government with independent advice on improving the protection of the health of people living in the IJmond region. Commenting on the report, Olga Timmerhuis, Director Health, Safety & Environment at Tata Steel Nederland states: “The expert group proposes, among other things, gaining insight into the entire emissions chain: from emissions originating on our site to exposure in the local living environment and the resulting health effects in surrounding communities. Tata Steel Nederland wants to contribute to this effort through its knowledge, data and expertise. We understand the concerns of local residents and want to support an approach that not only measures emissions at the source, but also provides a clear picture of actual exposure in the surrounding environment. We will discuss this with local residents, the expert group and the Ministry so that, together, we can develop clear, practical and effective monitoring criteria. We also recognise that further improvements to our processes are still needed.”</span></p><p><span><strong>Continuous Improvement Through Monitoring</strong></span></p><p><span>Optimising our processes based on measurement results is at the heart of our approach to reducing our impact on the environment. In recent years, we have significantly expanded our monitoring activities, covering more substances, more locations and more frequent measurements, complemented by independent monitoring carried out by external experts.</span></p><p><span>Tata Steel now operates more than 300 emissions monitoring points and a range of monitoring systems, including:</span></p><ul style="list-style-type:disc;"><li data-list-item-id="e36fb2d7c5b5f783da39ce174653d8638"><span>More than 60 electronic noses to monitor ambient air composition;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="e84cf293348a1d46633038d448ebfca2c"><span>Fine particulate matter sensors operated in collaboration with the citizen air-monitoring network;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="ea9d3848457aa3a7f441e7481113992fe"><span>Noise monitoring at more than 10 measurement locations;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="ecb9f748c3044e5272b96f15084e7c1b2"><span>Research into ultrafine particles in the surrounding area.</span></li></ul><p><span>Insights gained from these measurements are used to improve processes and further reduce emissions. Tata Steel publishes its monitoring results online, making them accessible to everyone.</span></p><p><span><strong>Source-Based Measures Remain Essential</strong></span></p><p><span>Alongside monitoring, Tata Steel is strongly focused on reducing emissions through source-based measures and environmental control installations. Examples include:</span></p><ul style="list-style-type:disc;"><li data-list-item-id="e0932c36b8102e2f87b2f48569e4423e1"><span>A new dedusting installation at the Pellet Plant, which has reduced emissions of particulate matter, lead and heavy metals by more than 80%;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="ee09eca06fc868d8ec65c166f6274f788"><span>An off-gas cleaning installation at the Cold Rolling Mill and other measures that have reduced PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) emissions from three sources by more than half;</span></li><li data-list-item-id="e52c528f5ab10d4558f3b0d128564864a"><span>A third extraction system at the Steel Plant.</span></li></ul><p><span><strong>Towards Green Steel</strong></span></p><p><span>Tata Steel Nederland aims to conclude a bespoke agreement with the Dutch Government this year for its </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green-steel-plan" target="_blank"><span>Green Steel project.</span></a><span> This agreement will include additional measures that go beyond legal requirements to further improve the local living environment and reduce health risks. The technical and logistical complexity of such a closure is significant, particularly in relation to ensuring proper safeguards for environmental aspects and safety.</span></p><p><span>TSN has been informed by the North Sea Canal Area Environmental Agency (ODNZKG) by letter of its intention to revoke the permits for the Coke and Gas Plants. This letter, and the uncertainty it creates regarding the timeline, also leads to broader uncertainty for TSN as a whole. Alongside the existing commercial relationship between TSIJ and Ecocem for the valorization of Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBS) in cement & concrete, this new collaboration focuses on Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) slag as an alternative cementitious material, alongside the continued development of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) slag as a supplementary cementitious material.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>By replacing clinker — the most carbon-intensive ingredient in cement — with alternative materials such as slag, the cement industry can significantly cut CO₂ emissions while giving industrial by-products a more valuable and circular use.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The aim of the BOF and EAF slags project is to transform these steel industry by-products into cementitious binders or constituents that can support the decarbonisation of cement and concrete production, while advancing circular economy principles. Using 100% scrap in steel production is not yet a realistic scenario and depends on many factors, such as the availability of scrap. However, participating in this research provides valuable insights for producing high‑quality steel that contains 30 to 40% scrap.</span></p><p><span>Machine Learning and digital models are also being used to examine to what extent contaminated scrap can be cleaned for optimal reuse. This requires removing unwanted elements from the scrap. Dr. Rana: “If we succeed, this will be a real win‑win, also because of the critical raw materials such as copper, we will be able to recover.”</span></p><p><span>Alongside universities and research institutes, </span><a href="https://cisma-project.eu/"><span>CiSMA</span></a><span> brings together commercial partners from various sectors including automotive, professional laundry equipment and engineering. Volvo Cars and Electrolux Professional, for example, are researching the (commercial) applicability of this recycled steel in cars and washing machines whilst boosting a circular approach and reducing CO₂ impact. The guiding principle is that this circular steel offers exactly the same properties and performance as traditionally produced high‑quality steel. Dr. Johan Pilthammar, Engineering Technical Specialist at Volvo Cars</span><i><span> </span></i><span>adds: “It’s very important for Volvo Cars to understand if, and how, a higher recycled content is influencing the steel’s behaviour. This project is of high value for us since it will verify that this assumption holds for the investigated steel grades in the forming process. Also, if we see differences with a higher recycled content, we will learn how to adapt to these changes.”</span></p><p><span>“Electrolux Professional&nbsp;remains&nbsp;wholly committed&nbsp;to&nbsp;reducing&nbsp;the&nbsp;climate change impact&nbsp;of our industrial operations. Steel is a key material in our production process&nbsp;and&nbsp;exploring innovative ways of introducing a greater level of circularity is of significant strategic importance&nbsp;to reducing our upstream Scope 3 emissions”, states Andrea Caputo, Sustainability Director BA Laundry, at Electrolux Professional. He concludes: “The CiSMA project&nbsp;has the potential to deliver truly game-changing&nbsp;results,&nbsp;and we are excited to&nbsp;participate&nbsp;in&nbsp;what is likely to be a landmark pilot test.”</span><i><span>&nbsp;</span></i></p><p><span>CiSMA is coordinated by Eurecat (Spain) and consists of 13 partners from five countries, including voestalpine, Volvo Cars, Electrolux Professional, RISE, Blekinge Institute of Technology, ALBA Synchrotron, Aerobase Innovations, the European Steel Technology Platform ESTEP, CSIC, the University of Liège and Tata Steel Nederland. Producing steel without generating steel slag is not possible. REACH is European legislation that applies to the entire European steel sector. Tata Steel IJmuiden is actively committed to the European update process of the REACH registration, which is currently being carried out by the European REACH Ferrous Slag Consortium. Tata Steel Netherlands is calling on activists not to disrupt the prestigious international chess event.</strong></span></p><p><span>We respect everyone’s right to demonstrate and to draw attention to the need for a rapid transition from fossil raw materials to sustainable alternatives. Both the activists and we share the same goal: the transition from coal to a greener, cleaner, and more circular way of producing steel in the IJmond region. This is why our Green Steel plan exists.</span></p><p><span>We differ in opinion regarding the timeline, and we have spoken with various activist groups about this on several occasions. As far as we are concerned, the dialogue will remain open.</span></p><p><span><strong>‘Wimbledon of chess’</strong></span></p><p><span>The Tata Steel Chess Tournament is a world‑famous chess event held annually in January at community center De Moriaan in Wijk aan Zee. This year marks the 88th edition. It is one of the largest and strongest tournaments, featuring top-level players (14 masters and 14 challengers) and attracting more than ten thousand visitors from around the world over the course of two weeks. The tournament has an important place on the international chess calendar, is a household name in the chess world, and is often referred to as the “Wimbledon of chess.”</span></p><p><span><strong>Boost for the coastal village</strong></span></p><p><span>What began in 1938 as an employee tournament of the steel company has grown into an international event of global stature. Since 2010, the tournament (formerly Hoogovens and Corus) has been named after Tata Steel. The event ensures that during the usually quiet winter months, chess enthusiasts travel to Wijk aan Zee in January. This gives a boost to the local economy — the original reason the tournament was moved to the coastal village.</span></p><p><span>We hope that the activists take responsibility and act respectfully, especially toward the hundreds of amateur players, emerging talents, and grandmasters participating in the tournament, as well as the thousands of spectators.</span></p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[statements]]></category>

We will review the documents.<br><br>Health and a clean living environment are important topics for us, just as they are for local residents and other stakeholders. We certainly take feedback and suggestions into account as we continuously work to improve our plants and reduce emissions of dust, noise, and odor.<br>&nbsp;<br>In recent years, we have taken various measures to ensure cleaner production. For example, we are reducing emissions of lead, other metals, and PAHs. The results of these measures can be found in our reports and on our website.<br>&nbsp;<br>With our Green Steel plan, we will take even more measures to improve the living environment. This has been explicitly considered in the recently concluded Joint Letter of Intent. We will continue to work on additional measures to further reduce emissions. In this way, we aim to contribute to a better living environment in the IJmond region. The new steel plant, which will operate using natural gas and green electricity instead of coal, is expected to slash CO₂ emissions by 5 million tonnes. With future integration of hydrogen, bio-methane, and underground carbon storage (CCS), the reductions could go even further – making this the largest single-company CO₂ cut in the Netherlands.&nbsp;<br><br>Hans van den Berg, CEO of Tata Steel Nederland, said: “Our Green Steel plan, developed in close collaboration with trade unions and fully backed by our parent company in India, represents an unprecedented shift – not just for us, but for the entire region. We are moving away from coal, and towards a cleaner, greener future.”&nbsp;<br><br>Jeroen Klumper, Director of the Green Steel Business Transformation, added: “Preparations are already in full swing. The blueprints are ready, we know where the new plants will be built, and we’ve detailed the environmental benefits in the EIA – from reduced nitrogen emissions to a significant drop in odour pollution. We’re going beyond legal requirements, using cutting-edge solutions to ensure our site remains future proof for decades to come.”&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Covering ore fields&nbsp;</strong><br>In a direct response to findings by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health (RIVM), Tata Steel will start to cover its ore fields – a move expected to drastically reduce the spread of fine dust in the direct environment. The covering of the ore storage areas is not part of the EIA. It is at the top of the list of additional measures being discussed as part of the Tailor Made Agreement ('Maatwerk-afspraak'). Other measures include, for example, reducing noise pollution and covering the conveyor belts.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Full support for health impact assessment</strong><br>In line with earlier recommendations from the IJmond Health Expert Group, Tata Steel is also supporting the creation of a Health Impact Assessment (HIA). In conventional processes, this generates heat due to friction, requiring cooling water that must then be washed off the cans—an energy- and water-intensive process. Tata Steel’s new line doesn’t need any of that. Thanks to the use of </span><a href="https://products.tatasteelnederland.com/brands/packaging/protact"><span>innovative <strong>Protact®</strong></span></a><span> steel and advanced internal cooling of the tooling, cans can now be formed in a dry process. This eliminates the need for emulsified water, reducing energy use and cutting the investment costs for customers.</span></p><p><span><strong>Food safety for the future</strong></span><br><span>Protact is a polymer-coated steel that reduces friction during forming. “The polymer layer also ensures that the can meets all future food safety standards,” says Hans van der Weijde, Director of R&D at Tata Steel Nederland. “There’s no need to apply a lacquer to the steel. While lacquer is still allowed under current regulations, we see a clear trend toward phasing out these chemical coatings. Lacquered cans also often contain tin. Protact allows for a shorter and cleaner production line.”</span></p><p><span><strong>Working with customers</strong></span><br><span>The new line can produce up to 400 cans per minute—25% more than the industry standard of 320. The machine at Tata Steel serves as a proof of concept, where customers can see the dry forming process with Protact in action at full industrial speeds. “That collaboration with the customer is crucial,” says Joris Essing, Marketing Manager for packaging steel at Tata Steel Nederland. “We have the expertise in the dry process, but the customer has to make it work on their own production lines. We work closely together to make that happen.”</span></p><p><span>That collaboration has already delivered results in the packaging market. One example is </span><a href="https://products.tatasteelnederland.com/expertise/packaging/case-studies/calvo-vuelca-facil"><span>Tata Steel’s partnership with <strong>Grupo Calvo</strong></span></a><span>, which led to the development of an innovative Protact tuna can. The polymer layer applied to the steel reduces the need for oil to keep the tuna fresh and make it easy to remove from the can. Thanks to their magnetic properties, steel cans are relatively easy and cost-effective to separate from other waste streams. Furthermore, for extra strength and stiffness, these parts can feature very intricate edges, but it is precisely these edges that are susceptible to cracking during the forming of the parts in the press shop. For the development of this new advanced steel type, we have developed specific test methods with which we can assess risks of edge fracture and measure the fracture toughness of steel types. With the new knowledge and insights obtained from this, we have been able to develop HyperFlange, which is both strong and edge ductile."</span></p><p><span><strong>Higher press shop efficiency and robust manufacturing with HyperFlange</strong></span></p><p><span>Edge cracking is one of the most common pain points in chassis press shops. With this newly developed steel type, we can address this challenge with and for our customers. Moe Ziaran, Marketing Manager Automotive Chassis & Components at Tata Steel Nederland, states: "Thanks to the product optimizations we have made with HyperFlange, customers will experience less edge cracks, minimized material loss, and reduced production line interruptions, all of which contribute to increased productivity and efficiency in the press shops of car manufacturers." This corridor will link the port of Duqm in Oman, the port of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and key logistics hubs in Germany, including the port of Duisburg in Germany.</strong></span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span>The agreement enables the commercial-scale import of renewable fuel of non-biological origin (RFNBO) compliant liquid hydrogen to Europe. The contract was signed during the state visit by His Majesty the Sultan of Oman to the Netherlands. Tata Steel Nederland, the port of Amsterdam and Ecolog are among the big industrial organisations that make this new trade corridor possible. &nbsp;</span><br><br><strong>International and European cooperation</strong><br><span>The agreement was signed by eleven parties in total, including prominent players like Hydrom, Oman’s national green hydrogen orchestrator, OQ, Oman’s global integrated energy group, Tata Steel Nederland, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG and Hynetwork, bringing together all the critical links for the envisioned supply chain. This supply chain capitalizes on proven technologies for the liquefaction, transport, storage, and distribution of liquid hydrogen. ECOLOG’s advanced vessel design ensures net zero boil-off, eliminating cargo loss in marine transportation. This transformative innovation significantly reduces unit freight costs, setting a new standard for efficiency and sustainability.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span>The agreement comprises several key components vital to the corridor’s development. First, the development of a centralized liquefaction, storage, and export facility at the port of Duqm, which is one of the hubs for Omani-produced green hydrogen. Second, discussions will be held on the pricing and delivery of liquid hydrogen to offtakers located in the broader Amsterdam area, as well as offtakers located elsewhere in the Netherlands and Germany, with EnBW as the aggregator. Finally, the aligned development of dedicated infrastructure throughout the corridor, including export and import facilities in the ports of Duqm, Amsterdam and Duisburg, as well as for several distribution modalities for gaseous and liquid hydrogen, most notably gas pipeline networks, rail connections, and barge distribution leveraging the Netherlands extensive canal network.</span></p><p><span><strong>A Step Toward Global Hydrogen Leadership and Energy Security</strong></span><br><span>This agreement is a significant step in Oman’s ambition to become a global leader in the green hydrogen export market, while simultaneously strengthening Europe’s energy security. Tata Steel’s steel making operations at IJmuiden in the Netherlands constitute one of the most strategically located steel plants in Europe with its own deep-sea port and proximity to key customers. The access to offshore wind energy, transmission and pipeline infrastructure will enable the transition to competitive green steel making for which intense engagement in ongoing with all stakeholders including the Dutch Government.&nbsp;<br><br>2. In FY2025, the Netherlands operations have recovered with liquid steel production volumes near capacity at 6.75 MTPA, after the delayed reline of one of the blast furnaces had impacted production in FY2024. However, the challenging demand conditions in Europe driven by geo-political developments, trade and supply chain disruptions and escalating energy costs have affected the operating costs and financial performance.&nbsp;<br><br>3. Tata Steel remains committed to ensuring that its Netherlands operations achieve their potential of being one of the most competitive, successful and efficient in Europe. In order to achieve this Tata Steel Nederland (TSN) has adopted a comprehensive transformation programme built on a multi-pronged approach of maximising production efficiencies, lowering fixed costs and optimising product mix and margins.&nbsp;<br><br>4. TSN will require a new and more effective organizational structure characterized by more accountability, standardisation, automation and elimination of duplication. This reorganization is expected to lead to a loss of ~1600 management and support function roles. Certain changes are also being made in the local management board of TSN.&nbsp;<br><br>5. Today, a Request for Advice for the transformation plan has been submitted to the Central Works Council and trade unions have been informed. Over the following weeks, an effective and comprehensive consultation process will be run on the proposed changes.&nbsp;<br><br>6. Tata Steel Nederland has an ambitious green steel transition plan under which one of the two blast furnaces will be replaced by a new Direct Reduced Iron furnace and Electric Arc Furnace by the end of this decade, eliminating around ~5 million tonnes per annum of CO2 emissions. It is also proposed to undertake several actions beyond permit levels and legal requirements to improve the quality of the environment for residential communities around Ijmuiden. Tata Steel is optimistic it will achieve a positive outcome on the discussions with the Netherlands government for requisite funding and policy support in the coming months. The transformation programme announced today will provide TSN the ability to make the necessary investments in its future.<br>&nbsp;<br>T.V. We call this "upcycling" in the industry," says Judith Krale, new business manager for scrap at Tata Steel Nederland and responsible for the use of scrap in steel production.</span></p><p><span><strong>‘Can deal’ contributes to 30% scrap use for green, circular steel</strong></span></p><p><span>She is often referred to as the woman of 30%, because Krale works every day to achieve the goal of 30% scrap use in the production of </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green-steel-plan"><span>cleaner, greener, and circular steel by 2030</span></a><span>. This is ambitious, as in 2022 the share of scrap in Tata Steel's steel production was 17%. Krale states: "</span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green/carbon-neutral-steel/dri-technology"><span>With new technologies</span></a><span> for making green steel, we can also recycle more steel. So, we are always looking for more scrap, including packaging tin." To achieve this, Tata Steel Nederland has signed agreements with ten scrap companies in multiple countries: the Nederland, Belgium, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The majority of the tinplate scrap in this 'can deal' comes from the United Kingdom, as that country has been engaged in waste separation for a longer period and is therefore further ahead in waste separation than the Netherlands and its neighboring countries.</span></p><p><span><strong>Increased steel density for a more sustainable end product</strong></span></p><p><span>At Tata Steel Nederland, the old steel, to-be-recycled tin is called 'tin can shred' because the steel cans are crushed in a kind of industrial mincer and flattened into small pieces, with a higher steel density. This has the advantage that its processing in the Oxy Steel Plant is more efficient, which in turn contributes to a more sustainable end product.</span></p><p><span><strong>Steel cans are the recycling champion of the Netherlands</strong></span></p><p><span>In addition to </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/Markets/Packaging"><span>the many advantages of steel food packaging</span></a><span>, such as long shelf life (even outside the refrigerator) and therefore less food waste, steel cans are not only easily recyclable but also relatively easy and inexpensive to separate from other waste due to their magnetic properties. In the Netherlands, steel packaging is therefore the 'recycling champion'. Almost 95% of the packaging steel used in the Netherlands is recycled into new steel. This includes beverage and food cans, aerosol cans, and paint cans. A challenge in this regard is that much of the old steel, such as from old ships or railroad tracks, is too large for regular conveyors and difficult to analyze. Therefore, Tata Steel researches the use of digital laser techniques to analyze the composition of scrap directly from the truck. The process works as follows: the truck carrying scrap enters a specially constructed gate with industrial laser and analysis equipment. The laser vaporizes very small pieces of the steel locally, creating a 'plasma', a small local gas bubble containing all the components of the scrap. This can then be filmed and analyzed with special cameras. Subsequently, depending on the specific composition and criteria, the scrap can be optimally introduced into the recycling process.</span></p><p><span><strong>AI and digital twins for reduced waste and more CO2 reduction</strong></span></p><p><span>Tata Steel researcher Bernard Ennis states: "In this measurement and analysis process, AI is used to more quickly recognize and analyze specific types of steel based on visual characteristics, known as 'scrap image recognition'. The manufacturing process is digitally modeled, or simulated, and tested in a computational model using 'digital twins'. This innovative combination of laser, AI, and digital modeling allows for more efficient sampling, faster scrap deployment logistics, and improved product quality. Moreover, this leads to fewer process errors in scrap deployment and thus less waste and </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green-steel/how-will-we-produce-carbon-neutral-steel" target="_blank"><span>CO2 reduction</span></a><span>." At present, the technique is being researched and developed under the 'DiGreeS program'. The first measurements with the ‘Laser- Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy’<strong> </strong>are scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2025, with the first results being announced. In 2026, the first prototype of the truck portal is expected to be ready for use, and the measurements and modeling will commence. Then, the implementation will follow, including the introduction of the digital twins modelled process.</span></p><p><span><strong>'DiGreeS': Research with German and Austrian steel producers</strong></span></p><p><span>'DiGreeS' is coordinated by the Fraunhofer Institute for Nondestructive Testing IZFP and aims to minimize the ecological footprint of the entire steel value chain through integrated digitalization. Within the 'DiGreeS' program, Tata Steel also collaborates with Saarstahl AG and the voestalpine Group. Saarstahl AG focuses on CO2 reduction of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) techniques at Saarstahl-Ascoval through the use of artificial intelligence based digital models, while voestalpine Group researches energy efficiency and conservation in steel plate processing. Tata Steel will also utilize this new knowledge when replacing the blast furnaces and coke and gas plants with DRI and EAF in the near future, as the traditional steel production process undergoes transformation and coal is replaced by sustainable energy.</span></p>]]></content:encoded><category><![CDATA[Nieuws,news,circularity,green steel,scrap,co2,ai,innovation]]></category>

The 'Steel Action Plan' discusses solutions for, among other things, flaws in border carbon adjustments (CBAM), energy prices, and addressing unfair competition.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Hans van den Berg – CEO Tata Steel Netherlands:&nbsp;</strong><br>"With this plan, the EC acknowledges the strategic importance of the steel sector for our continent and our industry. The commission has identified the right challenges in the current steel market. However, we urge the EU to expedite the repair of the CBAM and call on the Dutch government to ensure a level playing field in terms of energy with the countries around us. If this happens, our company can contribute to prosperity and security in the Netherlands in the coming decades."&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Energy Costs&nbsp;</strong><br>Reducing energy costs is crucial for the steel industry. The Commission's proposals on energy costs carry the risk of further weakening the level playing field between member states. We would like to see the Dutch government adopt the recommendations and opportunities from the European Commission, and develop a plan to align the costs for the Dutch industry with those of the countries around us. Belgium and Germany have already taken extensive measures, and the Netherlands cannot afford to lag behind.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>CBAM</strong>&nbsp;<br>The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is intended to prevent CO2 leakage. Through CBAM, companies from countries without a domestic CO2 price (which we have in Europe) must still pay for their CO2 emissions. If CBAM works well, it will create a more level playing field in the internal European market and prevent CO2 leakage.<br>&nbsp;<br>In its current setup, CBAM is not sufficiently effective because it is possible to circumvent the regulations. Products containing steel are not covered by CBAM, and if steel companies in other continents send low-CO2 steel to Europe without taking action on the rest of their production, CBAM does not contribute to reducing global CO2 emissions.<br>&nbsp;<br>Additionally, in its current setup, CBAM does not ensure that the export position of European companies remains competitive on a global scale. Steel is a global market, and European steel exports made with clean technologies also require a level playing field.<br>&nbsp;<br><strong>Unfair Competition&nbsp;</strong><br>Another issue that the European Commission aims to address is unfair competition. It is good to see that the commission continues to address protection against unfair competition. The current set of measures expires in 2026 and needs to be replaced. The new measures need to be strengthened in some areas.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Circularity&nbsp;</strong><br>Europe faces a shortage of metal scrap, which is necessary for producing cleaner steel. We endorse the need for a European agenda to make the industry more competitive, cleaner, and future-proof. Our Green Steel plan aligns well with the objectives of the European Union and those of Tata Steel Nederland.</strong></span></p><p><span><strong>Demand and circularity</strong></span><br><span>The transformation of Tata Steel Nederland can only be completed with a functioning market for clean steel. It is positive to see that the European Commission aims to take ambitious steps in the area of demand creation for clean steel. These steps are necessary in order to prevent fossil steel from hindering the development of the market for green steel.</span></p><p><span>Steel can be infinitely recycled. It is therefore positive that the Commission wants to do more to promote the circular economy. This is good for the steel sector and for the strategic autonomy of Europe. In the coming years, Tata Steel Nederland aims to use more scrap in the steelmaking process. Currently, steel is made with 17% scrap, which will increase to around 30%.</span></p><p><span>Simultaneously with the Clean Industrial Deal, the European Commission presents the action plan for affordable energy. In this field the Commission states it sees a significant role for the member states. Tata Steel Nederland is positive about the broader opportunities for dealmaking between the industry and national governments.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>In recent months, Tata Steel Nederland has made various efforts to restore a level playing field for the Dutch industry. We made clear that the government and industry must work together to ensure that the Netherlands remains a country of makers. Additional levies that weaken our industry must stop, so that the Netherlands obtains a level playing field in Europe. Innovations should not get bogged down in red tape. This position is also in line with the recommendations from the Clean Industrial Deal.</span></p><p><span><strong>Ambition</strong></span><br><span>Tata Steel Nederland hopes that the European Commission will do more to lower the price of green-produced hydrogen. This can only be achieved through scaling up hydrogen. The train is therefore a very sustainable transportation alternative and also good for the accessibility of the Netherlands. We are pleased with the trust placed in us by Tata Steel Nederland to contribute to the further sustainability of their logistics chain."</span></p><p><span><strong>Zero emissions in the chain</strong></span></p><p><span>Every year, Tata Steel produces and transports an average of 6 to 7 million tons of steel to its downstream sites in the Netherlands and in Europe and to customers at various locations worldwide. Tata Steel is reducing emissions from that transport as part of the transition to </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green-steel-plan"><span>clean, green and circular steel.</span></a><span> Tata Steel aims for zero emissions in the chain as part of this, the Outbound Logistics department of Tata Steel Nederland is working daily to make the global transport network as optimal, safe, efficient and as sustainable as possible.</span></p><p><span>In recent years, efforts have been made to transport as much steel as possible by (inland) ship or train instead of transport by trucks. For this purpose, the three-story industrial drop tower at Tata Steel was used. Dr. ir. Bernard Ennis, a researcher at Tata Steel Nederland, stated, "We can now confidently state that the newly developed metamaterials act as unique shock absorbers. The next step is to use an AI model to distribute the load more evenly. This way we can, for example, manufacture the casing of car batteries in such a way that the battery remains undamaged in a collision because the forces are diverted away from the battery. But this is just the beginning. With the use of these newly developed metamaterials, many life-saving applications are possible, such as using them for guardrails or making buildings earthquake-resistant."</span></p><p><span><strong>What are metamaterials?</strong></span></p><p><span>Metamaterials are materials whose structure has been altered, giving them different material properties than they naturally have. A straightforward example is steel. Steel is typically rigid or flexible. By changing the structure of steel, it acquires different steel properties, and its flexibility can be influenced as desired. The steel becomes, so to speak, 'smart, intelligent.' The researchers from Tata Steel Nederland and the University of Amsterdam have developed a new metamaterial together that can efficiently and repeatedly absorb shocks. Furthermore, this metamaterial can absorb more force with a smaller volume, making it lighter and therefore more sustainable.</span></p><p><span><strong>New startup: 'Metamaterial Works'</strong></span></p><p><span>The research will continue in the startup 'Metamaterial Works', focusing on further developing the new patented technique. Bernard Ennis will become the CEO of this startup, which aims to further develop the acquired knowledge for many more high-tech applications. Moreover, transportation from the Naantali Steel Service Centre will transition to a low-carbon basis through the utilization of the </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/zeremis/zeremis-delivered"><span>Zeremis Delivered</span></a><span> low carbon transport option. In response to the agreement, Ilpo Maaranen, Director of Tata Steel Naantali Steel Service Centre, states: "This agreement affirms our dedicated efforts with customers in our clean, green, circular steel strategy, as we take responsibility for a better world."</span></p><p><span>Meconet, a leading Scandinavian producer of sophisticated metal components for various industrial applications and a long-standing partner of Tata Steel, will be the first Finnish company to adopt Zeremis Carbon Lite, a steel with an allocated carbon footprint reduction of up to 90%<sup>1</sup>. Juuso Virtanen, Procurement Director at Meconet, comments: "This agreement represents a crucial step for Meconet in our decarbonisation journey, demonstrating immediate sustainable actions within our value chain, and further strengthening our excellent partnership with Tata Steel."</span></p><p><span>Jaap Jan Aardenburg, Marketing Manager, remarks: "Our expanding Zeremis portfolio is gaining strong traction in the market, aiding our customers in reducing emissions. The agreement with Meconet further underscores this."</span></p><p><span>Tata Steel Nederland is dedicated to becoming </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/sustainability/green-steel-plan"><span>a clean, green, and circular steel producer,</span></a><span> aligning its objectives with the European and Nordic industries' efforts to minimize climate impact. By 2030, Tata Steel aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 40% and achieve carbon neutrality by 2045. To achieve these targets, the company will implement innovations such as Direct Reduced Iron combined with Electric Arc Furnace technology. Following this, the hydrogen can be delivered to Tata Steel and other companies via the planned pipeline network.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Carbon Capture&nbsp;</strong><br>In the production of steel, even in the new Green Steel installations, a small amount of CO2 is still emitted. This quantity of CO2 is only a fraction of what is emitted in the production of coal-based steel. By capturing and storing this CO2, Tata Steel aims to produce climate-neutral steel. During the King's visit, Tata Steel and ECOLOG signed a second agreement, along with Horisont Energi, the Port of Amsterdam, OCAP, the Norwegian bank DNB, and ABN AMRO, to explore a CO2 corridor. CO2 from Amsterdam will be exported to Norway. The CO2 will be captured at Tata Steel and other companies in the region. The cold energy released during the conversion of liquid hydrogen to gas at ECOLOG's terminal will be used to liquefy the CO2 at the same location. In this form, the CO2 can be transported by ship to Horisont Energi's import terminal in Norway, where it will be permanently stored. This creates a liquid hydrogen/CO2 corridor, with efficient management of energy.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Dutch-Norwegian Collaboration&nbsp;</strong><br>These two agreements build on the strong collaboration between the Norwegian and Dutch governments in the energy sector. King Willem Alexander's and Minister Hermans' working visit focused on various themes, including hydrogen, CO2 storage, and infrastructure. Tata Steel Netherland greatly appreciates the research and advice provided by the Expert Group under the leadership of Professor Dr. Marcel Levi, and we aim to follow up on it as effectively and promptly as possible.</strong></span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="background-color:rgb(250,250,250);">The Expert Group states that residents in the IJmond area should have the same opportunities for good health as other residents in urban areas in the Netherlands. We understand this very well, as we are deeply rooted in the IJmond area ourselves. We have 10,000 employees of which the majority live here, with their families.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="background-color:rgb(250,250,250);"><strong>Measurement and interpretation</strong></span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="background-color:rgb(250,250,250);">The focus of the report is on the independent verification of our emissions measurements and the public disclosure of the<span>&nbsp; </span>data as a result of these measurements. Tata Steel sees opportunities for further steps and improvement. Openness and transparency is where we should focus on and benefit from. . We already publish all our measurement data in a special Environmental Annual Report that we publish&nbsp;<span> </span>annually. However, we realize these data are difficult for third parties or public at large&nbsp;<span> </span>to understand. We are pleased to read that the Expert Group states that our measurements are of good quality. We take to heart the assertion that we keep measurements secret.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="background-color:rgb(250,250,250);">Together with the Expert Group, relevant ministries, and other parties, Tata Steel wants to explore how we can improve the measurement of emissions and their interpretation as quickly and effectively as possible. Therefore, we would like to collaborate with external parties to further investigate the effects of our emissions.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="background-color:rgb(250,250,250);">Ruth van de Moesdijk, Director of Health, Safety, Security, and Environment at Tata Steel, says, "We will ensure that the points identified by the expert group are given even higher priority at our internal board meetings so that we can take them into account in our decision-making process.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="background-color:rgb(250,250,250);">We believe it is important to be part of a broader investigation in the Netherlands into ultrafine particles. In our view, one or more external, independent, and accredited parties are welcome to come and measure ultrafine particles, just like in other locations in the Netherlands, and to interpret their values and effects given the complexity of this subject.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="background-color:rgb(250,250,250);">We also want to explore how, in collaboration with the Expert Group and/or other parties, we can make our measurement results more transparent and understandable for residents and other stakeholders. The last thing we want is uncertainty or doubt. We take the concerns of local&nbsp;<span> </span>residents about this matter extremely seriously and hope to alleviate these concerns with more transparency."</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="background-color:rgb(250,250,250);"><strong>Integration of health into the Green Steel (Maatwerk)&nbsp;</strong><span><strong> </strong></span><strong>Plan</strong></span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="background-color:rgb(250,250,250);">As a company working in the heavy industrial company, our emissions cannot be reduced to zero. However, this does not mean that we do not strive to further minimize the impact on the environment in the IJmond.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="background-color:rgb(250,250,250);">Together with the relevant authorities, permit issuers, and other institutions such as RIVM, GGD, and the expert group, we want to assess how to integrate health in the right way into the Customized Plan, ideally without causing delays. We have been working on a wide range of measures to reduce the emissions of odor, dust, and noise for some time. We have also included additional measures, such as the coverage of our raw material storage, in our Green Steel plan. We want to proceed with these measures as soon as possible, as our ultimate goal is a </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en/Green-steel-and-sustainability/Co2-neutral-steel"><span style="background-color:rgb(250,250,250);"><span>clean, green, circular, and sustainable steel company</span></span></a><span style="background-color:rgb(250,250,250);"> in the IJmond area.</span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="background-color:rgb(250,250,250);"><strong>Continuing to reduce the impact on the environment</strong></span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="background-color:rgb(250,250,250);">For us, the most important thing is that we all share a common goal: further improving our processes and reducing the impact on the living environment. A clean environment is in everyone's interest. Nevertheless, we continue to focus on clean, green, circular steel and strive to minimize the negative impact on the environment. Moreover, the automotive industry is under pressure which affects Tata Steel directly as well. This deteriorating market situation is partly caused by steel imports from China at low prices. Additionally, the company’s competitive position is also under pressure due to the high costs incurred by Tata Steel Nederland, such as the high cost of the electricity network, energy costs and the additional Dutch carbon tax.</span></p><p><span><strong>Clean, green, and circular steel remains the target on the horizon</strong>&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;text-align:justify;"><span>Tata Steel is anticipating deteriorating market trends and prioritises </span><a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/en" target="_blank"><span>the company's green transition&nbsp;</span></a><span> at the same time. For this reason, Tata Steel Nederland is adopting cost-saving measures that directly saves money, including measures in procurement, sales and inventory management. In addition to this, a partial vacancy freeze is implemented as well as a significant reduction of training and business trips. At the same time, Tata Steel Nederland continues its steel production unabated in order to supply customers directly when the market recovers. The increase is expected to continue until 2045 under unchanged policies.&nbsp;</strong></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span>Grid Fees in the Netherlands are much higher compared to Germany, France and Belgium</span></p>]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Aurora Energy Research has found that network costs in the Netherlands will continue to rise over the coming decades, in a study commissioned by Tata Steel, Shell, Nyrstar, bp, Sabic, and Chemelot. The Aurora report, "Grid Fee Outlook for the Netherlands 2045," reveals that electricity network rates in the Netherlands are diverging even more from those of neighbouring countries than previously reported.&nbsp;<br><br>View Aurora's news item and the entire report<a href="https://auroraer.com/insight/grid-fee-outlook-for-the-netherlands-2045/" target="_blank"> <strong>here</strong></a>.<br><br>Network costs in the Netherlands are regulated by the Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) and cover transmission and system services. In the past two years, costs have nearly tripled, rising from 897 mn € to 2.5 bn € in 2024, primarily due to adjustments for high energy prices in 2022. Tennet, the Dutch transmission system operator (TSO), expects that costs will only decrease slightly in 2025 and 2026, as lower energy costs are partially offset by rising investments in the grid (offshore) and prepayments for future energy cost adjustments.&nbsp;<br><br><span><strong>Discounts in neighboring countries</strong></span><br>The Aurora study provides a forecast of total network costs towards 2045. These are translated into network rates for two typical consumption profiles: a flexible consumption profile of 3,000 full load hours and a base load consumption profile of 8,000 hours. The study shows that network rates in Germany, Belgium, and France are currently often more than 80% lower than in the Netherlands for both types of consumers. By 2030, Aurora expects that network rates in the Netherlands will remain higher than those of neighbouring countries for base load consumers; 15 times higher than in France, 6 times higher than in Germany, and 4 times higher than in Belgium. For flexible consumption, derived from new electrification technologies such as e-boilers and electrolysers, network rates remain up to 7 times higher than abroad, hindering the energy transition.<br>&nbsp;<br>The Dutch coalition parties strive for a level playing field for the industry. Aurora’s study shows that the Dutch energy-intensive industry will incur significantly higher network rates in 2024, and without intervention, the competitive position will further deteriorate towards 2045. To bring the network rates for large consumers in line with those in neighbouring countries, over 300 mn € annually is currently needed, growing to more than 500 mn € by 2030.<br>&nbsp;<br>Representatives of the involved companies and Aurora presented the report to Minister Hermans of Climate and Green Growth on August 14. In an accompanying letter, the companies request the minister to develop measures for both the short and long term to ensure that network costs in the Netherlands align with those of other European countries.<br><br>Jeroen Klumper, director Sustainability Tata Steel Netherland, stated:&nbsp;<br>“Tata Steel Netherlands wants and can contribute to the earning capacity and sustainability in the Netherlands. Our plan for making Green Steel has the potential to be one of the driving forces of the economy of the future. We are now seeing a decline in competitiveness due to rising network costs, among other things. This stands in the way of electrification and therefore the energy transition. The industry wants to contribute to making the Netherlands more sustainable. It must be clear that the investments will also pay off. Reasonable network costs that are in line with our neighboring countries are of great importance. Fortunately, the government recognizes the situation. I therefore hope that they use the results of this report when drawing up policy for the coming years."<br><br>Jesse Hettema, Head of the Netherlands & Belgium, at Aurora Energy Research, added:&nbsp;<br>“Rising grid fees risk becoming the showstopper in the energy transition. In 2022-2023, Tata Steel recorded a net profit of 352 million euros.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>In the annual report, Van den Berg speaks of a very challenging year: "The market deteriorated, with relatively high costs for energy and raw materials. This had a major impact on our financial results." In addition, there were delays in maintenance and renewal of installations.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span><strong>Turnover and production</strong></span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>Turnover amounted to EUR 5.9 billion, compared to EUR 7.2 billion in 2022-2023. Tata Steel produced 4.8 million tons of steel this year. Last year, that was 6.3 million tons.</span></p><p><span>An important factor in the decline in turnover and production was the renovation of Blast Furnace 6. The costs amounted to between 500 and 540 million euros (capex).</span></p><p><span>Tata Steel has managed to minimise the impact of the renovation of Blast Furnace 6 on production by, among other things, building up a substantial steel stock in advance to compensate for the (temporary) lower production. Tata Steel has also purchased steel made elsewhere and further processed it itself for sale. In addition, Tata Steel has been able to increase production at Blast Furnace 7.</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span><strong>Anticipation of deteriorating market development in 2023</strong></span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>Last year, Tata Steel was unfortunately forced to anticipate various trends and developments that would put pressure on turnover and results. That is why it was announced in November 2023 that 800 jobs would go. Van den Berg: "This was an extremely difficult decision, but necessary to maintain our competitive position during the transition and to realise the Green Steel plan."</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>&nbsp;</span></p><p style="margin-left:0cm;"><span>Job cuts have been reduced to 580. As such, Tata Steel adheres to the Employment Pact and there will be no forced redundancies. We do this by not filling vacancies and no longer hiring external staff. We also have natural staff turnover due to colleagues retiring, among other things.</span></p><p><span><strong>Undiminished commitment to sustainability and reducing dust, odour and noise</strong></span></p><p><span>In the 2023-2024 financial year, Tata Steel continued to focus on sustainability and reducing dust, odour and noise. From 2030, Tata Steel will switch to producing steel without coal and coke. Blast Furnace 7 will be the first to be replaced with installations that run on natural gas and hydrogen. Coking and Gas Plant 2 will then also close. Blast Furnace 6 will be shut down when the second phase of Tata Steel's Green Steel plan comes into effect. The percentage increase in scrap use is assured by independent assurance expert DNV in accordance with the GHG protocol and ISO standards. The steel can be made as thin as 1.5 millimetres here. Afterwards, the steel is cooled and coiled. This process of heating, rolling, and cooling can precisely produce the steel desired by the customer.&nbsp;<br><br>The commissioning of the sampling line is the latest in a series of investments in the Hot Strip Mill. These investments are specifically aimed at producing thicker, stronger, and more abrasion-resistant steel. This steel is used in demanding applications such as trucks and trailers, excavators, cranes, mining, and for pipelines for transporting gas, water and hydrogen.&nbsp;<br><br>Customers place high demands on the quality of steel. Upon their request and according to international standards, steel properties must be extensively guaranteed through test certificates, per steel coil or small batch. Therefore, rapid sampling and testing are essential.&nbsp;<br><br>The sampling line can fully automatically sample the entire production spectrum, from normal to ultra-high-strength steel, with steel thicknesses of up to 25 millimetres that can be cut. Samples are also taken hot, and the capacity of the number of coils that can be sampled has thus substantially increased. The plan has a clear timeline, goals, and endpoint. Health and climate play a prominent role in it. Now that the government has formally decided what the negotiating mandate of outgoing Dutch Minister Adriaansens of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy and outgoing State Secretary Heijnen for Infrastructure and Water Management is, negotiations have started with Tata Steel to lead to a legally binding and enforceable tailor-made agreement.&nbsp;<br><br>Tata Steel’s focus is now entirely on the first phase of its Green Steel plan. Once the tailor-made agreement with the Dutch government is in place, the company can begin ordering long lead items based on the progressed engineering work, ensuring it is on track for 2030.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Pathway to complete CO<sub>2</sub> neutrality by 2045&nbsp;</strong><br>In the coming years, Tata Steel Nederland will transform into a clean, green, and circular steel company. The company aims to produce the full product portfolio without compromising on quality and to become completely CO<sub>2</sub> neutral by 2045, as one of the first major steelworks in the world.&nbsp;<br><br>Tata Steel will implement its Green Steel plan in three stages. The first stage will go into operation by as soon as 2030 and consists of 1 DRP and 1 EAF replacing Blast Furnace 7 and Cokes and Gas Plant 2 (KGF2). This means 40% less CO<sub>2</sub> emissions. The company also wants to take measures to further reduce emissions and particulate matter, and use more scrap in the production of steel (from 17% to 30%).&nbsp;<br><br>In the second phase of its transition, Tata Steel aims to close Blast Furnace 6 and Cokes and Gas Plant 1 (KGF1), which will result in a total CO<sub>2</sub> reduction of approximately 80%. The external audit validating this achievement was conducted by the independent certification body DNV.</strong></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p>This milestone follows the footsteps of the company’s service centres in Naantali, Finland, and Halmstad, Sweden.&nbsp;</p>]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Gelsenkirchen site is part of Tata Steel Nederland’s Downstream business and is already the third European site of the steel manufacturer to achieve carbon neutrality in its production. This milestone follows the footsteps of the company’s service centres in Naantali, Finland, and Halmstad, Sweden.&nbsp;<br><br>“I am incredibly proud of our entire team, which has contributed with great commitment to ensure we operate CO<sub>2</sub>-neutral with regard to everything directly linked to our production,” explains Carlos Alván Peña, Managing Director of the Gelsenkirchen Service Centre.&nbsp;<br><br>In Gelsenkirchen, around 130 employees process advanced and high-strength steels primarily from Tata Steel’s mill in IJmuiden, the Netherlands, for customers in industries such as automotive, white goods, and construction. Operating a modern production facility, they cut steel coils into strips and sheets of various sizes facilitating the production of pressed parts, profiles and tubes, for example.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Road to a CO<sub>2</sub>-neutral site&nbsp;</strong><br>“Our journey towards CO<sub>2</sub>-neutrality began in 2022 with an interdisciplinary team mapping the site’s carbon footprint to identify potential savings,” continues Alván Peña. Since then, the site initially switched to CO<sub>2</sub>-neutral liquified gas and subsequently began to use only CO<sub>2</sub>-neutral propellant. Together with purchasing colleagues in IJmuiden, Gelsenkirchen ensured that today only renewable energies are purchased from a regional energy supplier.&nbsp;<br><br>Alván Peña: “These three steps have ensured that our site has now received the certificate for CO<sub>2</sub> neutrality. This is a massive milestone for us.”&nbsp;<br> &nbsp;<br>Gelsenkirchen’s achievement aligns with Tata Steel Nederland’s goal of becoming <a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/nieuws/en/how-tata-steel-nederland-is-tackling-carbon-emissions" target="_blank">completely CO<sub>2</sub>-neutral</a> by 2045. “In addition to major projects, such as the transformation to the production of green steel in IJmuiden, we are also working in other areas to become a more sustainable operating steel company,” explains Gunilla Saltin, Board Member of Tata Steel Nederland and Managing Director of the company’s Downstream business. “Our drive for sustainability in our downstream supply chain has great potential and we are pleased that our colleagues in Gelsenkirchen have taken a big step in this direction. Work is ongoing to ensure that also the other Downstream sites become CO<sub>2</sub>-neutral.”&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Focus on enhanced circularity and energy independence&nbsp;</strong><br>Looking ahead, the Gelsenkirchen Service Centre aims to intensify its focus on enhanced circularity, energy independence, waste reduction, and decreased paper consumption. For example, charging stations for electric vehicles were installed in March 2024 and the company is working on introducing <a href="https://www.tatasteelnederland.com/nieuws/en/tata-steel-launches-eco-friendly-delivery-service-to-help-customers-lower-their-environmental-footprint" target="_blank">Zeremis<sup>®</sup> Delivered</a>, the eco-friendly delivery service which was launched by Tata Steel Nederland in November 2023. This enables customers to reduce their scope 3 emissions<sup>1)</sup> and other emissions associated with steel transport. It is currently available to customers located within a 300-kilometer driving distance of the Tata Steel sites in the Netherlands and Belgium – including customers in Germany which are within that range. Furthermore, the Gelsenkirchen Service Centre is investigating whether it can enable its suppliers to use fossil-free energy powered trucks.&nbsp;<br><br><sup>1)</sup> Greenhouse gas emissions are categorised into three groups or ‘Scopes’ by the GHG Protocol. In our plan we have placed great emphasis on further reducing emissions and nuisance for the local community. In addition, the plan contains key health measures, including further reducing particulate matter and nitrogen emissions. This was also one of the recommendations from the RIVM report.&nbsp;<br><br>We support Wijers and Blom’s position that it is particularly important to make rapid progress. That is why we and the government are working intensively together on the preparations for the permit process. The customised programme that we are discussing with the Dutch government is an important condition for the Green Steel plan. It is of great importance for the future of Tata Steel in the Netherlands and for the social and economic value we create. We are in continuous discussions about this with the local community and all other stakeholders.&nbsp;<br><br>To make our Green Steel plan a success, we need our own knowledge, commitment and resources, as well as the financial and policy support of the Dutch government. Within Europe, attention must be paid to the affordability of energy and network costs. We are concerned that these rising costs are currently only imposed in the Netherlands, causing Dutch industrial parties to incur higher costs every year that companies in other European countries do not have. We will make every effort to minimise forced redundancies and help our employees in finding alternative employment, whether within or outside the company.”&nbsp;<br><br>To reduce overcapacity in precision tubes production, 3 welding lines and 2 sawing machines will be taken out of operation. These installations produce high-quality precision tubes for the automotive market, among others.&nbsp;<br><br>The request for advice for the intended measures has been submitted to the Works Council and the trade unions have been informed.
