                        <title>A Big Step Forward for Packaging</title>

But what makes this line so special? “We’re setting a new European standard.”</span></p>]]></pp:summary><description><![CDATA[<p><span>The TCCT line is a smart upgrade of our tinning line from the 1960s. It has been converted into a modern, sustainable installation. Mark Litz, Manager Process Technology, has been involved from day one. Five years ago, the idea existed only in his mind — now it’s reality.</span></p><p><span><strong>Top quality&nbsp;</strong></span></p><p><span>Our packaging steel was already top quality, of course, but we can now produce it in a smarter, safer and more sustainable way. The TCCT process uses chrome 3 instead of chrome 6, removes several steps from the original production process, and adds a protective layer that keeps canned food fresh for longer. That layer also makes it easier to apply a film that customers can then print with their own design.</span></p><p><span><strong>How it works&nbsp;</strong></span></p><p><span>So how does it work? We asked Daniëlle Vrenegoor, process and product technologist for the tinning and chroming lines. “The steel arrives in a coil. That coil is unrolled and then moves up and down through different processes along the entire line. Step by step, the steel is treated: pre‑treatment, chroming, rinsing, drying… and finally inspected with cameras and smart software to ensure we deliver the highest quality. At the end, the steel is rolled up again. Once the protective chrome layer is applied, the coil can move on to the next installation or directly to the customer.”</span></p><p><span><strong>Where to spot the product&nbsp;</strong></span></p><p><span>You won’t yet find cans made from this steel in Dutch supermarkets - the line has only just started - but in Spain you can already buy a can of tuna from the Calvo brand using Protact. And for a trial order in the United States, we have already produced whipped‑cream canisters. “With this innovation, we are setting a new European standard,” says Mark. “Our packaging is better for people and for the planet.”</span></p>]]></description><category><![CDATA[story,tcct,packaging]]></category>

                        <title>Green on steel? Turns out, it’s absolutely possible</title>

They cool buildings and cities, absorb rainwater, and create habitats for insects. But one type of roof has always lagged behind: steel roofs. Until now.</strong></p><p>More and more municipalities are encouraging - or even requiring - green roofs. And with good reason: they reduce heat and help prevent flooding during heavy rainfall. Except… metal roofs simply weren’t built for that. So we wondered: Can’t we do this differently? Smarter, easier, and above all, far more practical?</p><p><strong>3D-printed prototypes</strong></p><p>“We explored all kinds of existing systems,” says Mario Kenda, Manager New Product Development, Innovation, Development & Sustainability. “But none of them really worked on metal.” A missed opportunity for all those production halls, distribution centers, and offices, right? “It wasn’t until we looked at the plastic plant trays used on flat roofs that something clicked. With 3D-printed prototypes on a metal roof panel, the penny dropped: this could <i>actually</i> work.”</p><p><strong>Puzzle pieces&nbsp;</strong></p><p>And that’s how the Green Box was born: a simple click-on system that’s easy to install, even on slopes from 3° to 25°. It’s cheaper than traditional green-roof constructions — and it helps the bees (and other insects) too. The system lasts around 25 years. Besides slowing down rainwater runoff and boosting biodiversity, it also provides extra insulation, sound dampening, and cooler surrounding temperatures. “In hindsight, it sounds so obvious that I sometimes wonder why we didn’t think of it earlier. But that’s how it goes: only when you have all the puzzle pieces — the right mix of knowledge, technology, and need - do you finally see the whole picture.”</p><p><a href="https://www.sabprofiel.nl/" target="_blank"><i><span>SAB-profiel</span></i></a><i><span>&nbsp;</span>(Netherlands) and </i><a href="https://www.fischerprofil.de/de/produkte/fischertherm-carrier-d-greenbox" target="_blank"><i><span>Fischer</span></i></a><i><span>&nbsp;</span>(Germany) have been selling the Green Box since 2025. Radhakanta Rana – a born metallurgist, father of a teenage son, and a mission-driven scientist at Tata Steel – has found the secret recipes.</strong></span></p><p>Since childhood, Radhakanta dreamed of becoming a teacher – to shape young minds and make the world a little better. Through guest lectures at Delft University of Technology, mentoring students and leading industry–academia collaborative projects, he has come quite close to fulfilling that dream. But he has also published two highly utilised books on steels, is also Editor-in-Chief of a specialist journal in materials science & engineering and a leading researcher at Tata Steel in IJmuiden.</p><p><strong>From Blacksmith Roots to Global Recognition</strong></p><p>Radhakanta was recently honoured with the prestigious Gold Medal from <a href="https://www.iom3.org/" target="_blank">the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining</a> (IOM3) – a lifetime achievement award. Though he seemed destined to follow in the footsteps of his forefathers, he didn’t become a blacksmith. Instead, he became the inventor of more sustainable production methods and high-strength, advanced, and ultra-strong steels such as medium manganese steels, ductile press-hardened steels, tempered martensitic structural steels etc.</p><p><strong>Large-Scale Impact</strong></p><p>Which comes in handy – steel has countless applications. Its formability and weight may not matter much for the foundation of a building, but they’re critical in a car. That’s why we constantly need new recipes and a deep understanding of the microstructural changes occurring during steel manufacturing – and in some cases, even during forming and use by our customers. <span>Radhakanta’s steel grades are meant for large scale use in cars, cranes, and heavy-duty vehicles.</span></p><p><strong>Golden Recipes</strong></p><p>Radhakanta’s research focuses on solving one of metallurgy’s greatest puzzles: how to make steels stronger, lighter, ductile and yet more sustainable – all at once. “If you improve one property – like strength, weight or formability – it often comes at the expense of another,” Radhakanta explains. Still, he managed to crack the codes. How? By applying unconventional paths and not being shy to take risks in his research. As an example, he applied an existing alloy idea from automotive to the lifting & excavating world. “The foundation already existed. The innovation lies in the cross-pollination – no one else had done it this way,” he reflects.</p><p><strong>Spider Man</strong></p><p>In the automotive industry, there is a growing demand for ultra-strong, lightweight, and ductile steel that can be shaped at elevated temperature and still resists surface degradation. Finding that recipe was no easy task – it needed a completely new composition with high manganese to shape at lower temperatures than conventional press-hardened steels to overcome surface degradation. To make the steel more economical, the initial composition needed to be recalibrated with less manganese and more carbon. These efforts led to the development of warm-forming medium manganese steel. In the end, it requires less energy to produce, thanks to the lower temperatures; lighter cars use less fuel, and the steel is highly recyclable. When asked to compare his steels to something familiar, he doesn’t choose a technical metaphor but something closer to nature: bamboo – strong, flexible, and sustainable. Or even a superhero: Spider Man – agile, adaptable, and always serving society!</p><p><strong>A Greener World</strong></p><p>Today, Radhakanta is focused on optimising a wide range of steel grades designed to be produced using high volumes of recycled scrap – a key step towards circular steelmaking in IJmuiden. These sustainable steels will be used in everyday life of humankind – from home appliances to large outside structures. His efforts in R&D are key to the transition of Tata Steel in IJmuiden to a greener and sustainable steel producer. “In the future, people will live in a greener world – often without realising that the green steels quietly helped make it possible,” he says with a smile.</p><p><i><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;text-align:left;">A glimpse into Radhakanta’s personal photo album shows us some memorable moments of his life.
