Hydrogen is a flammable gas. It is colourless, odourless, non-toxic and carbonless. It can be used for cooking or heating. We will use hydrogen to replace natural gas in our production process. We will be making clean steel.
Making clean steel
Hydrogen is obtained from water (H2O) using electricity. Water is separated into hydrogen and oxygen. When hydrogen burns, heat and water are released. That energy is stored in hydrogen through electrolysis and released again by burning hydrogen.
Whether or not hydrogen is a clean source of energy depends on its production. Currently, hydrogen is made mainly using natural gas. This causes the release of CO2. This is called grey hydrogen. Another form is blue hydrogen. This is created when you capture and store the CO2 released during production, for instance in empty gas fields in the North Sea.
Tata Steel aims to start producing steel using green hydrogen as soon as possible. This form of hydrogen comes from renewable energy sources: sun, water and wind. Green energy is transported to IJmuiden from offshore wind farms. No CO2is released during the production of green hydrogen. That is how we make green steel for a healthy climate and a clean environment.
