Steel in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, we use 6.2 million tonnes of steel each year — that’s about one kilo per person per day. We eat, wash, live and travel with steel. It’s used everywhere. It connects us to each other and to the world. Just look around you — chances are you’re never more than two metres away from steel.
What do we use it for?
Without steel, there would be no houses, (electric) cars, batteries, household appliances or wind turbines — but also no storm surge barriers, bridges or agricultural machines. Steel is a vital building block of our society.

Construction, your home and its interior all rely on steel
Steel is the foundation of the way we live. It makes our homes strong, safe and sustainable — from the foundation to the roof. You’ll find steel all around the house: in the structure, the window frames, the kitchen and even in the garden.
The transport sector runs on steel
At least 40% of a car’s weight comes from steel. It’s found throughout the vehicle — from the chassis and bodywork to the door panels, interior, battery and (electric) motor. We’re the only steelmaker in Europe where you can source it all in one place.
Over 97% of high-grade automotive steel is recycled, making it a truly circular material.

The energy transition happens in steelmaking — and steel makes the energy transition possible
Steel is crucial to the energy transition — an essential but complex step toward a sustainable world. It plays a key role in helping us achieve our ambition to use 70% renewable energy by 2030.
Did you know Tata Steel Nederland works with universities to make wind turbines even more sustainable?
Stele in the future
In a previous campaign — The Power of Steel — we shared the bigger story about the future, innovation and the importance of steel to our society. Because steel is strong and endlessly versatile. It’s at the heart of many innovations, such as the Hyperloop. But circular (and modular) construction and the development of sustainable energy technologies also depend on steel. And let’s not forget: steel is fully recyclable — and that already happens in 80% to 95% of cases.

Sustainable steelmaking
Steel is the world’s most reused material. It can be recycled endlessly without losing quality. That makes steel a naturally sustainable material — and a key enabler of the circular economy. Steel also plays a vital role in the energy transition, not only in how it’s made, but also in how it’s used. Think of solar panels, heat pumps, wind turbines and pipelines for transporting hydrogen — all sustainable energy solutions that wouldn’t be possible without steel.
