Tata Steel Nederland and Meconet together towards decarbonisation
Tata Steel Nederland’s Naantali Steel Service Center and Meconet have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the supply of Zeremis green steel, enabling Meconet’s customers to make significant reductions in their carbon footprint.
In 2025, Tata Steel Nederland's downstream location Naantali Steel Service Centre in Finland will commence the supply of Zeremis® Carbon Lite, facilitating a substantial reduction in emissions within the Tata Steel-Meconet supply chain. Moreover, transportation from the Naantali Steel Service Centre will transition to a low-carbon basis through the utilization of the Zeremis Delivered low carbon transport option. In response to the agreement, Ilpo Maaranen, Director of Tata Steel Naantali Steel Service Centre, states: "This agreement affirms our dedicated efforts with customers in our clean, green, circular steel strategy, as we take responsibility for a better world."
Meconet, a leading Scandinavian producer of sophisticated metal components for various industrial applications and a long-standing partner of Tata Steel, will be the first Finnish company to adopt Zeremis Carbon Lite, a steel with an allocated carbon footprint reduction of up to 90%1. Juuso Virtanen, Procurement Director at Meconet, comments: "This agreement represents a crucial step for Meconet in our decarbonisation journey, demonstrating immediate sustainable actions within our value chain, and further strengthening our excellent partnership with Tata Steel."
Jaap Jan Aardenburg, Marketing Manager, remarks: "Our expanding Zeremis portfolio is gaining strong traction in the market, aiding our customers in reducing emissions. The agreement with Meconet further underscores this."
Tata Steel Nederland is dedicated to becoming a clean, green, and circular steel producer, aligning its objectives with the European and Nordic industries' efforts to minimize climate impact. By 2030, Tata Steel aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 40% and achieve carbon neutrality by 2045. To achieve these targets, the company will implement innovations such as Direct Reduced Iron combined with Electric Arc Furnace technology. Additionally, Tata Steel plans to increase its use of recycled steel to approximately 30% of its total annual production by 2030.
1) This is the maximum reduction for the sum of scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. For the sum of scope 1 and 2 emissions, this represents a 100% reduction. Greenhouse gas emissions are categorised into three groups or ‘Scopes’ by the GHG Protocol. Scope 1 covers direct emissions from owned or controlled sources. Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating and cooling consumed by the reporting company. Scope 3 includes all other indirect emissions that occur in a company’s value chain.
