Tata Steel Nederland accelerates climate neutral Downstream

New milestone

Summary

Tata Steel Nederland has once again taken an important step in its sustainability ambitions for its downstream business unit. CO2-neutrality has recently been achieved in the production of steel roof and facade panels at the Geldermalsen location (‘SAB-profiel’). This is the sixth climate neutral European location of Tata Steel Nederland.

Gunilla Saltin, member of the Board of Management of Tata Steel Nederland and responsible for downstream activities: "The CO2-neutrality that Geldermalsen has achieved is in line with our ambitions to be fully climate neutral by 2045. In addition to mega projects, such as the transformation to green steel production in IJmuiden, we are also working in other areas to make our company more sustainable. Our commitment to sustainability in our downstream businesses has great potential. Almost a third of our downstream locations are now climate neutral, and we continue to work hard to be fully CO2 -neutral.

The Geldermalsen location is part of the downstream activities of Tata Steel Nederland. Earlier, the downstream locations in Naantali (Finland), Halmstad (Sweden), Gelsenkirchen (Germany), and Maastricht (Feijen and MultiSteel) achieved CO2-neutrality on scope 1 & 2*. This means that the emissions directly related to production are climate neutral.

Govert Kockelkoren, CEO of SAB-profiel: "Our journey to climate neutrality began in 2019 with the construction of our new sandwich panel factory. We immediately chose to build without gas and cover the roof with 4,500 solar panels. We constantly try to improve our footprint by investing in energy savings and reducing our raw material consumption. We have mapped our emissions and set new goals. I am incredibly proud of our team. They have worked incredibly hard to ensure that we produce CO2-neutral."

About Tata Steel Downstream Europe (TSDE)

Downstream Europe processes steel from IJmuiden for high-quality applications in specific market segments, such as construction (roofing and facade cladding), the mobility sector (cars), and the energy sector (batteries). With 19 production locations in ten countries, TSDE supplies customers mainly in Europe and partly in the United States. TSDE is divided into five business units: Building Systems, Colors, Distribution, Plating, and Tubes.

*Scope 1 refers to direct CO2-emissions caused by sources within the organization itself. Scope 2 refers to indirect emissions that arise from the production of electricity or heat that an organization purchases.
